Interchangeability between 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton hitches?

A local junkyard has a couple of hitches for sale, and I want to buy one as my truck didn't come with one. I have a 1996 GMC 2500, will a hitch from a 1996 1500 fit my truck? Or are hitches more specific than that?

you need to buy a good quality hitch rated for the load you are towing. the ones in the jy are likely lightweight random rated and rotted to who knows what quality. only time i would buy one is if it was from a good aftermarket company like curt and still had all the ratings and didnt look beat.

It should fit.Are you talking the factory style reese type hitch,or just something they pulled off a truck.

If its a factory type,be sure to look it over good.If any doubt I would pass.

A new reese or curt hitch is not real pricey.I have seen them under $200.That really is a part you don't want to cheap out on.Its kind of important.
