Hey All,

I just picked up a 2006 LBZ duramax with 53k miles. I am trying to figure out the deal with this diesel fuel additive. I have been going to a gas station that cycles through its diesel frequently to make sure I am running clean diesel.

I have been looking on O'rielly's website to see what kind of diesel fuel additives they had. Does everyone run a sludge sediment remover, a diesel injector cleaner, a fuel conditioner? I have heard people saying you need to run it every fill up. I have also heard you need to run it only once a month. The owners manual says not to run any conditioner.

Help please.

Thanks,

Andrew

I like Power Service. But I only use it in the winter.I don't think you need to worry about the cleaners, and sludge stuff.Just be sure you are getting good, clean quality fuel.I would seriously look into some extra filtration, and lift pump.(airdog, fass) Plus if you ever bump up the power it will help in that department too.

Looks like a nice truck.

Congrats on the truck, it's gorgeous.

Ditto the Power Service anit-gel during the winter... that's the white bottle. Use the grey-bottled Power Service during the summer, it restores lubricity to the fuel and prevents damage to your fueling system. ULSD is TERRIBLE for all kinds of diesels, regardless of what the gov't says.

Avoid motor oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, 2 stroke, etc. You generally won't need cleaners run through your tank. If you need your injectors cleaned, check out this thread: http://www.duramaxforum.com/forum/how-tos-diy-write-ups/83493-how-diy-injector-cleaning.html

id deffinitly get some sort of additive that adds sulfur back to the fuel since the ulsd is horrible as DarkCharisma said since sulfur is one of the things used to lube the cylinders in diesels i believe, i found this great stuff while back for a buddy but forget what its called ill go look into it and see what i can find

How do you think the Power Service compares to XPD Opti Lube?

In regards to better filtration you may want to look into the Nicktane OEM filter head to Cat 2 micron filter adapter. I just ordered one on saturday and can't wait to get it and see what its like. The only thing is I'm not sure if the stock injection pump can pull fuel through a 2 micron filter or if a lift pump is needed. I would think it could to an extent but I've already got a Kennedy Diesel lift pump on mine. FWIW the Cat filter goes for about 15-20 bucks and the AC Delco OEM filter is like 40+ and I want to say is rated at 10 microns.

Those are good options.Never heard anything bad about the kennedy stuff.

It doesn't. Opti-Lube XPD tested far better in two DOUBLE-BLIND studies. Also Schaeffer Diesel Treat 2000 tested very well and is economical to run if you buy it by the gallon jugs . Texas Refinery Corp makes a great product as well. Another product avalible in O'Reilly's, NAPA,ect is called Howes Lubricator . It's not quite as economical as the aforementioned but is avalible at your chain stores if that's important to you. I would not dare run ULSD today without a good lubricant enhancer. There's no such thing as good fuel anymore. It's all nasty and has as little additives in it as they companies can get away with.

upgrade fuel and oil filtering...wouldnt even hurt to do coolant filtering aswell..sometimes cast blocks retain some of the sand casting and this gets pushed through waterpump shorting life...l dont add anything to my diesle mind you its a cummins...
