I recently stumbled upon the fact that GM decided cabin air filters are not necessary anymore because people were too stupid to change them and their A/C systems would die :fail: . I know there is a DIY Method to basically do what GM did not and add a filter to the ventilation lines. Does anyone have a link to an instruction list on this? I can't find anything from Google or anywhere on the forum by searching. Thank you in advance for any assistance.
Maybe next GM will come up with a "oil-free" engine, that way people can't forget to change their oil before their engines blow up :banghead:
So you want to add a filter to your non-cabin filter equipped truck?

Correct, I've seen multiple people post that the housing itself is still there for the filter. They just did not place any mounts or something like that. A lot of people on other forums say they have done it but nobody has done a write-up or How to on it.

AMEN to that rant!
Fiancee's Camry has a cabin filter, and it keeps the HVAC smelling fresh all the time.
My 07 Classic has a momentary odour when cranking the fan to full. :teddy:

I'm hoping to find out this mod so that once I do it to my silverado, I can do it to my dads as well since he lives in GA and every pollen season his interior turns yellow from the pollen entering from the vents.
Also i'm in arizona so every time there's a dust storm you bet I am suffering with a 100 degree plus interior than have all that dust blow through my vents...

What model years don't have a cabin filter?

03 was the year they discontinued them.
I believe they are starting them again back in the 2012's because they relocated the filter to under the glovebox or in that general viscinity.

Where is the cabin air filter in an 02?

Exactly, hopefully someone who knows (or has done this) can inform us how to do this on hopefully both the NBS and OBS trucks.
I'm surprised GM hasn't thought of the brilliant idea to do this as a GM Certified aftermarket part that you can have dealer installed to maintain bumper to bumper warranty... they would make some SERIOUS money off of that from every allergy sufferer in the world. Then the customer would be informed "Hey, that filter keeping your air clean, doesn't stay clean forever... Change it"

It's under the glovebox, you should see a plastic cover with a screw. You wont have to actually remove the glovebox.
Just take that screw out, remove the cover and the filter should be right there.
Apparently Dodge decided the cabin air filter wasn't a necessity on their trucks either for their third generation Rams :thud: .
Wonder if anyone has worked around their trucks cutting fiberglass and turned on the A/C or something hazardous like that, read up that people have blasted anything from sawdust to sand through their vents because they got in the exterior air intakes.
I had three OBS trucks and never smelled anything strange, they didn't have filters.
I think the smell is your girlfriend :D

Mine's an NBS and I only get the strange smell when I first turn it on for a minute or so then there isn't a smell. I'm just more worried about the dust storms we get out here, they happen during the hottest part of the year.
Oh, and at the moment I'm happily single... lol
Personally I think it's aflop of a design, that's why they killed it. I've never heard of an AC system taking a crap because of not changing the filter.

According to GM they had massive amounts of A/C issues, not necessarily complete failures (but still big $$$ repairs) because they got so clogged the pressure backup messed with the system.
Try blowing through a straw, now cover the end of the straw and try blowing through it... lol
