Trans temp gauge gmt-800

I have heard of adding a stepper motor to the cluster for transmission temp
Does any body know if it will actually work
Soldering in the motor adding the new plastic is all easy I just wanna know if that's all it takes to get it to work or if you have to program the cluster

For Reference it's a 2002 Tahoe 4x4 5.3l 4l60e

I read that you have to have the cluster programed to make it work. A bunch of guys on another forum tried it and said it lights up and everything but it never registers temp.
