I have a question about the 4WD controls on the dash of my 03 Z71. As you know in this model the 4WD is controled with the buttons to the left of the steering wheel. In order top to bottom you have Auto 4WD, 2 high, a neutral light with no button, 4 high, 4 low. Ever since I bought this truck it has been set to 2 high. A couple times here lately, without pushing any buttons, I get in the truck to go to work and notice the red Neutral light is on. Then I go back later in the day, crank up to go somewhere else and the 2 high will be back on, again without pushing any of the buttons. Any idea why this is happening, and also, what setting should it be on for everyday driving???

Switch itself is prone to failure. Repalce switch. If that proves fruitless it is likely the Transfer Case control Module (TCCM).

Everyday driving is 2hi.

Quyonmob pretty much covered it. You should try to at least cycle to 4hi and 4low once in a while. Just find a field or loose gravel parking lot a couple times a year and drive 20ft or so. This wont prevent your current problem but it will keep the rest of the system free and working.

Thanks! What exactly is that N setting with the red light? It doesn't have a button there, only the light.

It indicates when the transfer case is in neutral like you said in your first post.

This should explain how to switch to neutral.

you can take apart the switch down to the circuit board and re-saunter the contacts. it takes about 30 minutes and you will never have another problem with the switch.
