In an induction motor, slip rings provide a means for connecting external resistance in the rotor circuit. Inserting external resistance increases the slip of the motor and reduces the operating speed at any given load torque. Slip rings are provided with wound rotor induction motors, not squirrel cage induction motors. There are control schemes in which energy is returned to the power source rather than dissipated as heat in external resistors. Other schemes have also been used. Applications formerly served by wound rotor induction motors are today usually served by squirrel cage induction motors and variable frequency drives.
