View Full Version : No muffler vs. Glasspack??

Hey I drive a 2001 chevy silverado 5.3 and I was wondering what was gonna be louder, glasspacks or no muffler? I am currently running no muffler into 2.25 pipe then into 4" tips but its not exactly loud enough for me. It is all tone and no cackle which is fine by me but it can barely be heard at idle and when cruising town its really mellow. My friends are all telling me that glasspacks will make it louder but I dont see how that is possible because I dont have anything restricting the exhaust now. I know glasspacks will make it cackle more but will it be louder? Thanks

No. A larger pipe may help a little, or dumping the exhaust closer to the cab. These trucks are just quiet. The only thing on my truck that was any louder than straight pipes(before headers and no cats) was an SLP loudmouth I series. Basically like a hollow can which did amplify the sound some. If you want some sound, get rid of those cats and go with some longtube headers.

No a glasspack is not going to be louder then straight pipes. Like the guy above me said, a single chember muffler might amplify the sound, you could try a flowmaster 10 series

well thats what I figured. If I put on high flow cats would that change the sound any or do the cats not restrict much?

ive got 2.5 true dual straights on my 2000 and a friend with glass packs on a similar truck. just my opinion but i just dont like the glass packs on these trucks and it wont be louder

Running true duals with no mufflers rather than a y-pipe will make it louder and give it a little crackle. If you want to get louder than that you will have to change out the cats.

Mine has true duals, no cats or mufflers and 5" chrome tips. It sounds awsome at idle but when I get on it she kackles like crazy. If I could just get rid of the kackle it would be perfect. If you want loud go with true duals and no cats/mufflers.
