View Full Version : Amp shutting down

Ok I currently am running a 1000 watt and a 650 watt amp. Neither amp is being pushed hard. However the 1000 watt amp is pushing two Memphis 12s and is wired to 1 ohm. It is a .5 stable amp. When I try to turn stereo passed maybe 25% amp cuts out. I put a 500 watt capacitor on it just to see if it helped and it did a little. I want to fix it right. Currently I have a run of 4 gauge ran to a distribution block and then the 1000 watt amp and a 500k capacitor which feeds the 650 amp is run out of distribution block. I was told I need to run a 0 gauge wire. Could I possibly run another 4 gauge to the block instead. Money is tight and I won't be driving after sept 18 for a few months (back surgery #5). I have enough 4 gauge we're I could even run two more wires to the block. Would that help? After funds go back to normal I will have no problem running 0 gauge but right now I don't have extra money to spend. Unless some one is around central pa and needs obs parts like dash and interior panels and wants to either buy stuff or barter for wire. Hell I also have a brand new dual 12 Memphis audio ported box. I used it for one day and decided to build my current box.

Id check the grounds to make sure that they are all tight or to see if power is the issue disconnect one of the amps and see if the working one still works. But id say because you are supposed to have a fuse that is rated for the wire and that is not blowing that you are getting enough power so it must be something else.

Grounds are solid. I put 3/4 bolt double nutted through floor and the cable attaches to frame that was scraped clean on both head and nut side and also double nutted for bigger
Contact patch. I will add another ground just incase.

I wonder how well aircraft stainless steel
cable would work for making ground wires?

If your ground it good then your power is next. Depending on how turned up the amp is....typically 4 gauge to a distribution block isn't enough especially if your running the amp at a low 1 ohm....just yo answer your question yes you can run another 4 gauge and see if it'll help. You will eventually wanna run 0 though

the 4 gauge is a bit small if its actually a 1000RMS watt amp. SO you said you have enough to do 1 more run, possibly 2 more.. what i would do, is do one more run for sure, and use the extra to do your " big 3 " if you have not yet.

The amp is getting hot, or is overloading the sub and puts it in safe mode making the amp cut out.
Im not too keen on this stuff but i had a 1000w kenwood that would do that and i took it in and they said ^ was why its was cutting out

I've already done the big three.
I figured I'll have to run 0 gauge. The amp doesn't get hot or anything. It cuts out for a couple seconds then comes back on. I think I'm going to run 2 more lines of 4 gauge for now since I have it and I'll use that down the road to run other amps for highs when I upgrade later and also upgrade to dual batteries. Thanks for the suggestions fellas!
