245/40/20 rubber? opinions, and other options

20x8.5 with 5.5BS on a NBS chevy.

Since the 275/45s i got wont work with a 4/6 drop, i need to figure out what size tire WILL work

I want as beefy of a tire as i can run up front without rubbing.

Is 245/40/20 the tallest i can run?
I found some 245/45/20s on This web site (http://www.importautoperformance.com/falken_tiresx.html) but i have a feeling its a missprint. Falkens site is horribly slow so i cant check there. They would be 28.7" tall.. Which SHOULD give me the extra 1/2 clearance i would need?

How risky is the 245/40s at bending rims? This is my biggest fear. Are they beefy enough to be somewhat safe for daily driving?

Judging by the looks of my front wells, if i rolled the lip, i would be able to make the 275s work up front. HOWEVER, the part of the wheel well which is over the tire, right next to the lip sticks down too much. (level with the lip , and much more solid). Is there anyway to bend it up? If there is, the 275s should work. I know alot of guys take the inner wells out to make their trucks lay out, so this piece must be able to be "made work"? Thoughts?

I have seen 255/45 20's from Toyo or Yokohama. They are not cheap, but will look good and give you enough sidewall height. I believe they are around 29" diameter, and are originally for the BMW X5. They are a fairly new size so they are hard to find, but some of the online tire places shoud have them by now. Good luck.

I just bought some 20s for my 90 and they have 275/45/20 the front is 4 right now I had to roll the lips and my inner fenders a re removed for future plans. They still occasionally rub when turning over bumps.Also when you hit a large swell type bump it hits the inner fender with the top of the tire.Ill take a pic if you want to see what it looks like....hopefully Ill have some 255/35/20 soon and have it rebagged tho!I was just glad to get some chrome!

I'm running 245-40-20 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. Expensive as ***** but the treadware rating of 420 was twice that of all the other 245-40-20's I could find. I figured it was worth the extra $$$ as I would save in the long run plus you can't go wrong with Michelins. I haven't had any problems bending rims and I'm pretty abusive.

DJM 4/6 drop and 245/40s it is :-) .. Im gonna try some cheaper ones first though.. Will hopefully get me through the summer

I have been running 245/40/20's for about a month now with no problems. The brand of tires i am running is Ventus they ran me about 250 each.

BFGoodrich KDW 245/40/20 and 295/40/20 with DJM 4/6 drop.I had that setup with no problems,but needed to change to toyo 265/50/20 and 305/50/20.Safer to tow a 28 ft boat.I still have them if anyone looking for that size.

Yes Ventus is a model by Hankook. I'm running the Ventus 245/40/20s on my Tahoe. It's a very good tire for the price.

The tread design looks nice as does the sidewall and it sticks to the road when it's dry and does great in the rain. Hope this helps.:D

Yeah, I have no problems with them. I just stay aware of the road conditions and don't do any 4 wheelin'.:crazy: :D

I'm also running 245/40 Hankook Ventus. Haven't had any problems with them yet.

Bugs:

While asking people how susceptible the rims are to bending (with the smaller tires)... you should keep in mind where they are from. I am sure the percentage of good roads is much higher in southern climates (ie no snow/salt/freeze-thaw).

Looks like you list Ontario as residence... if it is anything like Michigan- you know there are plenty of rough roads and potholes.

Also, please consider (for your safety) the load capacity of the tire.
Low amounts of load reserve have been known to get people in trouble.
