I gotta tell you though this add on is NICE!! Everyone should do it and its easy...well except for the beginning when you have to cut out the headliner but its all worth it!!!
This is what my console looks like. It came out of a 95 suburban I believe and was grey in color. What I did was pull the upper and lower part of the console apart and redid the console in tan "leather look" vinyl. It took a little while but came out allright I think.
http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/10/web/202000-202999/202101_72_full.jpg
Well this is the first shot of the headliner right after I made my first cut in it. I almost forgot to take all the pictures. As you can see I made sort of a template with the console by placing it where it should be and outlining it in pencil so that I would have a good idea of where to start cutting into the roof. After I did this I started cutting where the rear tabs on the console would slide into. I played it safe by cutting small and forward of the tabs so that I would not make any unnecessary cuts.
http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/10/web/202000-202999/202101_68_full.jpg
This is my first chunk of headliner I took out and this gave me a good idea of where the slots for the console were at and then I started cutting towards them being careful enough not to cut outside that penciled in area, cause that would not be covered by the console when installed.
http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/10/web/202000-202999/202101_69_full.jpg
This is what the tabs on the roof look like. This is where those 2 plastic hanging tabs slide into. There are no screws in the rear at all, they just slide into this.
http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/10/web/202000-202999/202101_70_full.jpg
You must cut all the area where the tabs will slide into so that it will all line up properly. I needed more to cut in this picture!!
http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/10/web/202000-202999/202101_71_full.jpg
These are the rear tabs I was talking about on the rear of the console.
http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/10/web/202000-202999/202101_73_full.jpg
This is a better pic of all the area cut out for those tabs and the only 2 wires that I found already ready to be connected to the overhead console. The only wire that was missing is the white wire that belongs to the remote/garage door opener. But this wire was only for the lights on the face to light up. The actual power connections for it to work are already connected up together with the dome light connector. So you will be able to operate the remote but you wont have the lights on the face while you are driving around with the lights on. But if you want the lights on then just splice that white wire with the orange wire and they will work just fine. See the next 2 pics for this.
http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/10/web/202000-202999/202101_74_full.jpg
http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/10/web/202000-202999/202101_75_full.jpg
This is how the connector from the headliner and the one from the console hook into eachother, it was a perfect fit. There was no need for any splicing whatsoever.
http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/10/web/202000-202999/202101_77_full.jpg
Now I have finished the rear and it all fits fine so I made a rough cut in the front to see what I was facing. I can see 2 more slots but that is not what I needed so I needed to cut forward of this area till I saw two holes that you will see in the next pic.
http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/10/web/202000-202999/202101_76_full.jpg
This is what the holes look like that the front hooks up into, you can kinda see exactly where they go. The only issue I have ran into is that the place where the screw must be mounted into does not have a place for the screw to be held properly so what I will do is place a small piece of wood there that I will screw into and have a solid place to hold onto.
http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/10/web/202000-202999/202101_78_full.jpg
This is how the console looked like when we were almost finished.
http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/10/web/202000-202999/202101_79_full.jpg
Well one more pic with the dome lights on for good measure. The only thing missing from this job now is that one screw up at the front of the console. I will buy the screw at the hardware store in the morning and screw this baby into place finally. I love the way this thing looks like in my truck now.
http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/10/web/202000-202999/202101_80_full.jpg
Well if any of yall need any more info whatsoever just ask and I will try my best and answer it. Next mod will be the escalade speedometer console swap. It has arrived finally and just itching to be put on. Laters!!:head:

I put an overhead console in my truck too, about 2 months ago. I love it and it adds to the interior. Anyone have any ideas about what to mount in the dead space at the front of the console? I thought about switches.....but then realized I only have a couple things controlled by switches. Throw out some ideas.

From what I understand ext cabs, crew cabs, & SUV's have the bracket already in place, I you have regular cab yo may have to fabricate the rear mount. You can alway remove the dome light and look for the 2 square holes to hook into. My Tahoe has them and I just purchased an overhead console for it.:D

The overhead console will fit nicely in the standard cabs. I put one in mine last summer.
You have to take your dremmel tool (or something similar) and cut the tabs off the back of the console. My truck is an 88, it may be different on later trucks. Also, there is no mounting hole up front either. You have to drill into the inside panel of your roof... VERY CAREFULLY! The roof is double wall, you just don't want to go through to the outside. If you have a drill stop use it, if not a good stiff piece of fuel line will work.
I ended up drilling 2 holes in the rear and one in the front. The console was then secured by 3 sheet metal screws. Remember, it's not like you have to support any weight or anything, it doesn't take much.
I butted the back of it against the plastic trim that your dome light mounts in and it worked out perfect.

Anyone else with a '98 1500 Silverado put an overhead console in? Everything is perfectly fine on mine, except that I can't find the wires to hook up to the lights to save my life! Am I the only one, or did they just decide to play a joke on the 98's?

I'm not shure if the standard cabs are equipped for the overhead consoles.
I think the consoles are wired with the ligheted sunvisors, if you dont' have those, i bet you don't have the wiring either.

My 88 never had wiring either...
These are the instructions I used for mine (don't know if the colors are the same with the 98) I would imagine it would work for yours as well.
Run 2 wires from above the dome light, above the headliner, out the hole, to the front of the console. Hook up the wires so the console's orange wire goes to the orange wire on the dome light and the console's black wire goes to the dome light ground.
Do not attach it to the white dome light wire, or your map lights won't work unless your dome light is on. You may have to notch a hole in the dome light assembly so it will go up flush.
These instructions were found at:
http://www.lwm.cc/oh/
It doesn't appear to be working right now and there are a bunch of broken images so maybe the site isn't active anymore.

I have a very small gap in mine, you have to really look to see it. If you didn't know it was there you wouldn't even notice it.

What year of a truck did you put it in?
And if you mounted it using screws, did you grind the brackets off of the back of the console?

Just put one in my Standard Cab 03, replacement for the short one. Now I have to pull it back down and rewire it since the lights don't come on when I open the door. Also need to remount the original dome light further back. I’m going to take apart my Valentine One radar detector and see if I can mount the controls behind the cubby hole cover then put the rest of the detector in the garage door opener space.

When you installed the console on your 03 Regular Cab, where were the bolts you removed to pull down the console? I want to install LEDs to show the placement of the map lights and I don't know how to remove the console on my 2000 Silverado Ext. Cab LT series. Any and all help would be appreciated.
Thanks :bling:

just put in my overhead console, looks great.......it was put in my 96 ecsb, had to cut the headliner out, so i went to the junk yard and got the console and half of the headliner out of a 99 burban to use as a template for $75, lined the headliner piece up and traced the cut outs and then cut it. got an anchor nut from ACE Hardware and glued it to the other side of the hole in the roof, slid the console in the slots for the back and tightened down the front......it's good to go......very easy to do......
FYI......there was another gray overhead console there if anybody is interested, i can get it for you?????? just trying to help my fellow FSC members out.....

Any what any luck getting the map lights to come on with the dome light?
I have a orange and white wire at the dome light. The overhead console has 3 wires. Orange and then 2 black wires, after the connection there is only 2 wires, one of the black wires stops at the connection and does not go through. I have tried everything i can think of, but i can only get the lights to work by pressing the map buttons.
any ideas????

Anyone that wants to do this, it can be done but if you wire it to come on with your dome light you wont be able to turn it on unless your dome light is on. Also, they wont come on with the dome lights unless the switches are in the on position.
Dome lights work off of a reverse ground system, when you open your door you are not putting power to the light you are completing the ground circuit.

Try connecting the two wires to the wires before they connect to the Map light switches. You have them connected after the switches. I hooked up an LED before the Map light switch and the LED is on all the time. I use it to mark where my Map lights are in the console at night. I hooked a potetiometer to the LED to be able to dim the brightness of the LED. It works great. Good Luck!

Thanks for the info guys.
I have the wires hooked up from the dome light to where the connector is at on the console, I cut of the connector(since i had to run wires from the light to the console). So this is before the map light switch.
I have the ground to the truck(not dome light) and then the + wire from the dome light to the + on the console wire harness.
I have seen other consoles on this board, and on the conosle wire harness there is 3 wires, on my there are only 2 wires, maybe that is the problem, can some look next time yours is down and see where the wires go to inside the console. one wire goes to the switch, and the other goes to the light ...

I've got a '98 Silverado K1500, and I'm about to do the same project, kinda funny I came across this page, I thought I was one of the few who wanted to put in an overhead console. I'll let you know when I start cutting. If you can't find the wire, simply run a 16 - 18 guage wire up through the dash and along the trim, tucked under the front of the headliner and back to the connections of the OH console. All that is only needed if you can't splice into the dome light.

btw, if anyone ever comes across a blue console on ebay or something, i would appreciate an email: joeliusczar890@yahoo.com. I think blue is kinda rare, and I would like to have a factory piece as opposed to having to fab vinyl or use spray paint.

I would just like to know what's the point of all the compartments on the Overhead Console?
The front (blank spot) is supposed to be where Rear A/C on the Burb's is, right? Then, I don't know what, because the piece is missing on mine, then the garage door opener, right?
I have this in my tahoe (stock), I just need to find if GM has that piece for the first compartment, at the dealership...

There are three compartments, the first one is for your garage door opener or you can get a homelink panel with built in opener. The second one is a compartment for sunglasses or glasses. And the third one is for CDs.

Thanks for the write-up. I know its old, but i just started working on my truck and this was my first mod. The only problem is that i wish i had the one with a larger deadspace in the front so i could actually mount something there. Mines basically too small to put anything in there. Pictures are in my gallery if u even care. Oh well, still adds to the interior big time.

I just installed long overhead console in my 05 Extended Cab Silverado. It has the slots in the roof panel for the tabs to slide into. I did not have the piece to go into the hole in the front for the screw to go into. I carefully drilled a hole just in front of the square hole that is in the roof panel for this purpose. I then used a self tapping screw to secure the console ( make sure it is not so long as to hit the roof skin). I have not hooked up the map lights but after reading these posts I will make a connector to pull power off the dome light and the sheet metal will be my ground.
I want to install HOMELINK does anyone have any info how this will work and where to find one to fit in the garage door opener of this console. Thanks Roadking

Well i FINALLY finished my install last night. I think i had every difficulty i could have possibly run into. First of all my truck didnt have the wiring harness to clip into, so that meant i had to tap the dome light. next, my domelight didnt have the ground wire it was supposed to have, so i had to tap my own ground. next i had a short with the gauge that was killing the gauge fuse, and as a result the truck too. i think i ran into every stupid problem humanly possible. Im very happy with the end result though, even my homelink system appears to be working but i havent tested it yet (the light works on it). If i can find a spot to safely and easily mount a sender, i will be installing an oil temp gauge next the trans temp gauge - i already ran the wiring for it.
here are my final pictures:

If you splice into the dome light, your maps light will only work when your dome light would work. I ended up running some speaker wire down the pillar & grounding one of the strands below the dash & spliced the other strand into accessory power down there. Works great!

thats cause your dome light switches off a ground, so you can rob the 12+ from the dome light and then ground off one of the two screws that hold the plastic light up. or run from the dash like you did, either work great.

JoeliusZ28, I like what you did with the gauge. I have been thinking of puting some of those gauges in my truck but wanted something different then the Pillar. What size gauges did you use?

Now I know that I have rear AC controls in there, the console came out of a suburban, Ill eventually get a blank to put in there but for now I didnt want an empty hole. I didnt think about taking pix as I made the holes but I did take these two after it was done.
For those of you that have a gap up towards the front its because of the back behind the map lights and you can cut a hole out behind them and the gap with do away.

got mine for less than $30 on ebay.....
as for those people that are installing this and do not have the harness.. or only have two wire harness..... you need a ground, always hot, and only hot when the headlights are on. To me it is important that have everything wired correctly, if you have 2 always hot the lights for the homelink will always be on...... that means even when the truck it shut off and your not there.. they are on. very important to have those connected to only on with headlights.

I also have a question: does anyone know how to program the homelink? I did it on a ford once and you had to hold the outer two buttons for 5 seconds, but that doesnt work on the GM.
Apparently it was not an option at all on the trucks. The owners manual only shows the compartment where you just stick a regular opener inside.

I used a sharp razor blade in both my trucks.
I noticed you have a NBS truck, I just installed a console in my 02 regular cab and it was very different than when I installed one in my 88 regular cab (this how-to was done in an 88-98). I have come pictures to upload and was planning to create a how-to for the 99+ regular cabs.
When I installed mine I moved the dome light back and rewired the map lights to work with the dome lights and independantly.

I'm sure it possible however you'll have to put new switches behind the buttons themselves as they are a momentary switch. It'll probably involve some fab and wiring trickery.

Yeah it's not hard. It's basically right infront of the domelamp.

I just put a console in my truck. $20 from a junkyard. I took measurements of the 2 holes, drew them out and started cutting.
Only problem I ran into was that I couldn't find the dome light wires to splice into. I felt around as far as I could with my fingers, but it's not there.
I guess I'll have to run a wire down the pillar to a source, and ground it at the mounting screw.

Thats bad news. I bought the overhead console out of an Olds van a while back and was kind of hoping a bracket would just appear. I dont want to tack weld the roof. Maybe I'll just superglue it to the headliner?

i had a guy glue some lights to my headliner. i would not reccommend it. it ruined my headliner and now i am stuck with some rips in my headliner. trying to now cover them up(i have never done a headliner before). so unless you get it so they are hard as a rock with screws and the glue i would not do it. just my .02

It doesn't really matter, but just incase some of you guy's didn't know, the console that come's out of a suburban is taller than one that come's out of a truck. Defenatly grab what you can though, because truck one's are hard to find. I got lucky a found one out of a truck,,,but it's the wrong color. I needed a maroon one. Then I went to another yard and found the right color out of a suburban. I haven't did anything yet, but I may just get the truck one re-upholstered, or use the cloth off the maroon one. I might take the cloth off and see how well I can clean the glue off and paint the plastic. But I bet I'll end up just recovering it. Or I might just use the suburban one like everyone else since there appear's to be a blank for the a/c switch's available.

They look almost the same, but I think the 99-06 has a slightly different front where it looks like there would be a large gap between the console and the headliner. The thing I like about the one I found is it has the digital readout area in the front as opposed to the blank or ac controls. I'd like to have the digital readout, but not if there's gonna be a large gap between the headliner and console. Please someone help, so I can order the right console. I want to get this done soon.

guys - to eliminate the gap that forms by using an SUV console in a truck, cut down the alignment peg to the left of the nipple where the screw goes, and also cut down the nipple. don't cut it OFF, or completely flush with the console, as you need some meat in there for the screw to grab. but if you cut it down a bit, you can get the console to sit flush. also - someone else suggested cutting out a piece of headliner where the sunglasses holder hits the headliner - I can say from experience he's 100% right and it works. my console looks like it's always been in my truck. once I figure out how to post pics, I will.

They make a billet filler for the overhead console that accepts two guages. I actually got mine on E-Bay. Search for overhead console filler.
I put Nordskag digital Oil Temp and Trans Temp guages in mine and wired a Painless Wiring switch in the line for power so I can turn them on and off. The switch is in the dash below the light switch. if you want that insert, look in the older models. they tended to be in those more often, in my experience. I think rear A/C controls started becoming standard around 95 or so, and the separate A/C system followed along with it. no consoles I've found in 95's or later have that exact insert. all of the ones I've found have at least one knob to control the rear blower.

You can purchase the blank from a dealer. Mine was gray. I went to a interior shop & they sold a 4' x 4' square of headliner material for $5. Then I flipped it over & removed the screws that hold the upper & lower halves together. Removed the old gray stuff & installed the new blue stuff useing 3M interior adhesive. Installed the screws & was ready to go. Really very easy.

the wires being present isn't really important. just cut a section of wires with the connectors from the "donor" truck and then splice them into your harness. it worked great on my truck. I mounted a trans temp gauge in place of the single A/C knob, and I'm in the process of adding a remote winch control switch setup.

Do you have any pics of this install? Was the console from the blazer the long one and did it fit flush up against the headliner? I was considering that option but some said it would fit flush...was also considering taking the computer itself out of the blazer and install it into my silvy console

Here's a simple mod for those who want the map lights to come on with the dome light.
First, you have to reverse the power feed to the map lights so they are constantly fed 12v, and the switches connect the ground (if you've upgraded to LED, they may have to be flipped in their sockets).
Now just connect a pair of diodes between the lamps and switches and connect that to the dome light's switched ground.
The diodes keep the map light switches from backfeeding and activating the dome lights or the opposite map light.

If the diode pair looks suspiciously like half of a full-wave bridge, you're right.
You can do the same thing by using a bridge rectifier and trimming and insulating the "-" lead. Connect the "+" lead to the dome light's ground lead, and connect the map lights to each of the "AC" leads.
The bridge rectifier is packaged a bit more conveniently for this type of project, and some of the larger ones even have a hole for mounting.

Well My truck is over at my buddys uncles garage. Put a new Fuel tank and pump in today and now a fuel line blows. But id be more then happy to snap a few for ya. It is long one, and where the dome light is on Blazer console, theres a 2 screws holding it up, and the one screw up front. Once you pull the dome light out of your truck, you wanna drill 2 holes about 2 inches from Orig. screw holes in s10 console and go through cab brace. and run ya a screw through.
One thing is the head of the console is going to be moved more towards back of truck some, but it isnt in a spot that looks awful. looks like it came with the truck. and theres an orange, white and black wire coming out of the blazer console, splice dome light orange and white, dont worry bout the black wire, and your set!

Well here she is, colors black, but i couldnt pass it up for the price and ill get it to match up when i start this new job and have some money to put in er. Or if my buddy can come across a BLue one to match truck. Seems to be a rare color of sorts
My question is How can I get the Map Lights to come on seperate so i dont have to turn the dome light on too? I have a Orange, White, and a Black Wire Coming from the Console and a orange and white off the dome light. As you can see since its a s10 console, i had to remove the stock dome light for the S10 console to fit, How can i get this to work so i dont have to have all 3 lights on when i only wanna push the button for the map light?
RichLockyer
08-03-2011, 08:33 PM
On my '95, orange is hot 24/7 and black is ground.
White is from the door pin switches.
I'm not sure how the console is wired, but you should be able to connect the white and orange to the original dome light wires, and connect the black to a body ground and have it work as it did on the S10... everything comes on with the door, but only the individual map lights come on when the map switch is pressed.
If that's not happening, I posted a wiring diagram a few days ago that allows it to work that way (takes a couple of diodes)... or just insulate the white wire from the map lights and it should then work like the Tahoe... dome light only with doors, map lights only with the switch.

The wire's on the console or in the roof of your truck?
My console came with a pigtail. The pigtail had the brown wire, but the console did not have homelink and only the orange and black wires were on the console.
If the brown wire is on the roof of your truck, check it with a meter... it probably is for the homelink lights.
Homelink probably draws it's power from the same power feed as the map lights since they both have power 24/7.

no the brown was from the pigtail i think im going to connect it to a constant power and see what turns on if it is for the home link lights ill send a wire to my light light switch so they will turn on with my others

Here are some pics of the install on my 98 regular cab. After cutting off the mounting tabs in the rear, I took out the back compartment and predrilled the two holes for the rear screws. Once I held the unit in position, I simply poked holes through the headliner with a nail where the screws would mount, and i scratched the surface of the roof so i could identify the marks once I cut out the head unit. I had to make three holes in the head liner. One for the screws in the rear, one for the screw in the front, and one above the map lights since the housing sticks up above the console. As stated in this thread, be very careful when drilling the roof skin. There is 1/2 inch clearance in the rear, and only 1/4 inch clearance toward the windshield. Be very careful with your screw selection. I spliced a power wire into the dome light... which I had to take a chunk out of for the new wire in order for it to draw tight back into its housing. I ran the ground to one of the mounting screws, soldered the wires to the factory pigtail I took from the junkyard, and installed it using the factory plug. Took about an hour start to finish. Got all the info I needed from this thread and this other site http://www.lwm.cc/oh/ . Thanks again guys!!!!

yeah, i have to agree with a couple other posters in here, thanks a lot for everyone who has posted pictures of their install, it was a great help to me. I wouldn't have dared cut into my headliner if it wasn't for y'all being there showing me that it'll work great! and if anyone is wondering, yes the slots for the OH console are there in a OBS crew cab. I meant to take pictures when i did my install, but completely spaced on it, as a buddy of mine was fixing his fuel tank crossover box in his truck, another was installing my infinity speakers in the rear, another buddy was switching his hood with a better one he found at the salvage yard, while a fourth was messing with his power steering pump. needless to say, we all just got back from the salvage yard, and we all were playing with our trucks and installing new goodies. lol

Not "lime" led lights. "Limo" led lights. They put them in conversion vans a lot, but i pulled this console out of a 96ish Chevy extended cab that had a "cowboy conversion kit". That kinda kit is usually done aftermarket with wood grain accents and hidden LED lights. Ill post a picture when as soon as i can that shows it better.

Just did mine today after reading this thread. I never thought it would have been so easy. Thanks for everyone's input that really helped me along the way.

found one in a Olds Bravada
schnellttz06, did you get any PM feedback on this? I want to add Homelink and am researching my options. Could you add a pic of what you bought? I'm having a hard time finding what other GM brand Homelinks might work.
For those who have worked with the overhead console, how do you take it OFF? Do you first have to remove the blank at the front, and if so, how? I don't want to break any tabs trying to get mine down.

It's hard to get a good shot of this in a standard cab but here's a few pics of mine.
It took a little fandangling but I put my Scangauge up there.

Dude, if you have the shorter panel than he does you can put a DIC in it. That's what my (uninstalled) console has.

Man, I thought someone in this thread had installed one. If this device looks like it'll fit in your console, then it will. It tells you instant economy, avg econ, temperature, heading, distance to empty, and other stuff. Pic isn't mine, but it is the same thing as mine.

That's pretty cool. I wanted to put in a ScanGauge though so I could get engine codes. You know where I can find a DIC?

Optional yes, but also rare as hens' teeth to come like that from the factory.
