  • 5.7 ltr to 6.5 turbo diesel

I'm thinking of switching my 5.7 to a 6.5 turbo diesel other than the fuel tanks, radiator, and torque converter what else would need changing or adjusting?

Will you have a donor truck or just putting in the engine?

Your TH400 will fall apart behind a turbo diesel.

I would say forget the 6.5 and find a good 12v cummins with all the effort you will be going throw by switching motors why go with something the last a long long long time

Re: 5.7 ltr to 6.5 turbo diesel

nothing wrong with the 6.5, great on gas mileage and reliable. if you want to make it a power house you would need to put in 18:1 pistons, a turbo from a 95+ cummins or ford 7.3, larger intercooler, and run methanol/propane/nos through it. plus they are MUCH cheaper than a cummins, easier to find, and cheaper parts.

things you will need from the hummer

          engine

your th400 would survive, but you would need a new torque converter for it as well as a new hydraulic assembly, go with the 4l80e that should be bolted to the 6.5 already

the 93 is mechanical injected, so the only computer is the one attached to the tranny, so bring it unless you plan on doing a manual swap or using your th400

brake booster/master cylinder, as well as the power steering pump. the gm diesels use a hydroboost setup and these two parts are what is linked to it

          fan and fan clutch

glow plug relay and everything attached to it

i'm doing a similar swap in my 94 suburban (using a 6.2 with the 6.5 turbo) pretty soon and thats what i've been told you will need.

It will take some fabrication to get that intercooler in front of the truck....the 6.5's (especially the early ones) have an overheating problem and sticking more stuff in front of the rad doesn't help....if you are going to go with the stock IC make sure that you do the 97 cooling upgrades to go with it....

...ive seen turbo 400s behind 500hp+ BB, im sure it has some mods but it survives fine. Ive done alot of reverse to drive slams with mine and it didnt even blink.

true, if you mod the engine like i stated in my 1st paragraph the th400 would be mutilated. but with a stock 6.5, i've seen 1 guy put a th400 behind it, and its survived for about 80k miles so far.

Yeah well....even the 4L60E is a decent trans with mods but we all know how well it holds up in stock situations.....

I believe the TH400 is a 3 speed trans.....wonder how high it would be reving at highway speeds?.....better off with the 4L80E (same trans but with an overdrive)....

Re: 5.7 ltr to 6.5 turbo diesel

3rd gear in a th400 is 1:1, same as an sm465, and the 4l80e's 3rd gear, as well as the 700r4/4l60e's 3rd gear. if you kept your speed at 70, had around 3.73 gears and 33" tires your rpms should be somewhere around 2200 rpms, not bad at all.

the 4l60e/700r4 is a funny tranny, sometimes they live for forever, even being abused. other times, they die within a few thousand miles and you havent even abused it yet. mine has 128,000 miles on it and hasnt given me any problems, but i've been lucky so far with this one.

Re: 5.7 ltr to 6.5 turbo diesel

With a 1:1 ratio at 70 MPH with 3.73's and 33 inch tires you would be turning right around 2700 RPM....not 2200 RPMs.....better recalculate that one!

                        I've been through 3 60Es in a 4.3 V6 in 300 000 kms.....expensive maintenance item IMO....
