Should i buy a new 5.7 vortec from chevy, or build up a 383 like whats his name did with the stock intake and crappy spider.

Is there any way to make a 383 without borein the cyclinders?

Like clearancing the inside of the block?

Im lookin for the cheapest way out because i might have to rebuild the tranny too, wont know if its good until i get the motor in..

This is all goin in a 96 tahoe 4x4 that was just bought .

you cant build a "383" without boreing the cylinders 30 thou, but you can still puta 3.75 inch stroke crank in, and come up with a 377. (not the destroked 400). Also alot of the times there will be no clearincing of the block to fit the crank. I didnt have to clearence mine at all.

To answer your question on if you can build a 383 without boreing i believe it is possible. Back in the day a 383 was built by running a 400 crank and boreing .03 over like papa_smurf said. But today gm sells crate motors that are 350's with just a bigger crank, they use a slightly larger stroke then the ones swapped in from the 400's so there is no need to bore it .03 anymore. The new zz383 and ht383 run a 4 inch bore and a 3.8 inch stroke. Where the 400 crank is a 3.75.

So long story short, yes you can build a 383 without boreing it, but can you find one of those cranks with a 3.8 inch stroke on a budget? I am not so sure about that, gm sells it for 1400 clams, i am not sure if they are abundant in the bone yards yet.

        Hope your build goes well!

You can buy a used vortec 350 for cheaper then building a 383.

Lol well he asked because he said that he might need to rebuild the transmission too. Go to Car-Part.com. Excellent web site.

yeah i know it would be cheaper but im lookin for it lasting a while..

Not sure if im goin to go 383 or not, probaly later on .

would it be safe to reuse the old pistons in the motor?

as long as the piston tops are good, free of marks or sharp edges, the ring lands are perfect, the skirts are good, etc. just hone and put in new rings, new oil pump, new gaskets, seals, water pump, etc.

May i suggest the upgraded spider and manifold spacer while you are at it. the upgraded spider may save you some money/trouble in the long run, the spacer is just for fun.

thats what i figured.. they look good. after i get them out i will make another post and start taking pictures of everything

how can you tell if the camshaft is still good?

The motor had 180,000 when i pulled it 4 years ago.

It was labor knocking or spark knocking i think.

At WOT it would run like a b on fire, but it would make a god awful noise.

If your going to build a 383 do it now! You can reuse your old pistons if your going to rebuild the 350, just make sure everything looks good! Your going to want to get new rings, and hone the cylinders! As far as the camshaft your going to want to measure each lobe, look it over very carefully looking for defects, you will also want to make sure that the distributor drive gear is in good shape. Anything else should be pretty obvious, also you may want to knock out the old cam bearings and out some new ones in!
