  • HELP!!! Oil not registering on stick

Just bought this truck and this is my first oil change that I've done. It's a 2003 Chevy 4.8 4x4. I put in 6 full quarts of Mobil 1 and it doesn't register at all on the dipstick. Not sure what is up with it, all I can think of is maybe it has a bigger oilpan than others. It registered full before the change.

Am I right that it's suppose to hold 6qts?

***no oil on driveway - registers 40lbs pressure - motor hasnt blown yet***

yep, positive it's in there. I can start it up and it's all over the stick, and it's good and clean. I'll get a few more quarts tomorrow and see what fills it up. Dipstick looks stock.

check the owners manual and see how many it says you're suppose to put in there. too much oil can be a problem when it starts foaming up.

How much did you drain out when it was reading correctly on the stick?

Re: HELP!!! Oil not registering on stick

I'm not sure how much drained, filled the drain pan though. I will measure how much the drain pan holds in the morning. A few other things I noticed when I changed oil is that the filter I took off was larger (taller) than the filter I put on. I will get the model numbers in the morning. Also, my oil pressure is running a little higher (gets closer to 60psi on take off), probably the smaller filter.
The owners manual on Chevy's website said 6qts. I've checked my options in the glove box and do have the 4.8L. I am curious how much oil a 5.3 and 6.0 hold.

4.8, 5.3,6.0 liter all hold 6 qts. If it's a stock 4.8, with no addons like a bigger oil pan etc. Then it takes 6 qts. As far as the oil filter goes, some 2wds take the smaller filter, and some of the 4wds take the longer one. Same filter diameter. SHould make no diffrence in the oil quanity. I wouldn't put any more oil in there. It's probably either really clean or you could have a "brain fart" and put 5 in there.

Even the 8.1 only holds 7 quarts so no I wouldn't go dumping more oil in it. Somethings wrong.

someone else with a 4.8 needs to measure their tube and stick length, so you can compare

nope, pretty careful with my new truck w/50k miles on it and I put (one) 5qt jug and (one) 1qt 'bottle', so noway it could only be 5qts in there. I will go compare parts (dipstick and pan) with another truck asap. everything seems to be fine with 6qts for now. The guy that had it has added a few things so no telling whats on it as it went thru two dealers before it got to me. i will have to look for aftermarket oil cooler and stuff also.
Thanks for the info so far.

Re: HELP!!! Oil not registering on stick

The 4.8 just takes 6 quarts like everyone else said, the higher pressure is because of the smaller filter(I noticed that on mine as well). Are you sure you are putting the dipstick in all the way? Drain the oil into something clean and measure it and make sure you put 6 quarts in before you go adding more oil into. Then you will know for sure how much you put in.

EDIT: I'd measure mine, but it's kinda pouring outside.

This may sound dumb, but anyway, are you sure it was a 5qt jug? I use Pennzoil and their "jugs" are a gallon=4 qts. Just eliminating the obvious stuff.

Used to own a FSC, now I just have my extremely old Buick.
Have some perspective please. Thank you.
