  • 14 Bolt Semi Float Conversion Questions

I have a '90 Chevy K1500 that has a 10 bolt with 3.73 gears. I want to convert to the 3/4 ton 14 bolt semi floater. I just bought brand new wheels and I wanna stay with 6 lug. I don't do any real hardcore off roading. Just some mudding and I wanna be able to go with 38" tires.

My first question is what years do I search for the complete axle? I found an article that said 86-93 light duty 3/4 ton. Is that correct? I wanna hit the junkyards soon.

Yup that sounds about right. My buddy's plow truck is a 88 and has a 6 lug 14 bolt.

Cool. Does he wanna sell the rear end? :)

Are there any other years that will work for a simple swap?

If you want a simple swap the you need to stay within you body style. You need an 88-98 or a 99-00 classic (OBS) otherwise you will be changing spring perches and shock mounts. In that you have a 4wd then you need a 4wd rear as well, the 2wd are 3" narrower.

Re: 14 Bolt Semi Float Conversion Questions

Ok so my question is which years do I need to stick with to have a direct bolt in? I want the perches in the same place and the total length to be the same. I heard some years are narrower and some are longer. So I also need to make sure I get a 4WD rear end as the C2500s are shorter?

I'm thinking 88-93 4WD K2500 so far. What about the Suburbans? Same deal?

          Thanks to all

For a direct bolt in look for these
                  1988-98 K1500 w/14 bolt cover (1999 old body w/5.0L or 5.7L also)
                  1988-95 K2500 w/6 bolt axles

Suburbans and the K2500 w/8 bolt axles used a different length housing and axle and a different width spring perch.
                  (According to Hollander interchange)

Guy at the junkyard said he has a '89 C2500 with a 14 bolt 6 lug axle. I told him I need a 4WD, he told me they are the exact same. Please advise on this anyone...
