Have you got experience? got the special puller for the crank pulley, a regular one won't work. Even myself, with 44 years experience, it would take all day, my truck, I'm on no hurry, don't wanna do it again.. You should pull the pan too.

Its a better part of day. The balance puller has to be insanely long. That bolt is close to 4 inches long. Just did that same job on my dads 1500HD but his was a 2001.

there isnt really anthing wrong with it, the pressure is just lower than i like to see. it has 40psi cold and 30psi hot, im going to put a melling 10296 pump in it. that should help the pressure , i guess i will fire up the heat in the garage and tear into it in the morning.

What's the mileage on the truck? I'm assuming you verified the pressure with another gauge(mechanical).

My brother's Chevelle has about 32psi Hot with a new Melling pump and a mechanical gauge. And yes, it's a Gen III 5.3L.

Ah, I see. Just take your time with the o-ring. That's pretty much the only thing people tend to screw up. Good luck!

                  Re: 6.0 liter oil pump

i finally got around to doing this, definately wasnt a fun job at all. the relief valve was stuck in my old pump, it has great pressure now. hot it idles at 55psi and has 65 going down the road,im glad i went through the trouble of taking the pan off. hit had some nice sludge bildup in the bottom of it,i think my radiator has a defect though. there is no drain in it, there is a place where it should be but its not there.has the nipple on it where the drain hose should be though, looks like they forgot to drill and tap the tank for a drain plug. so that made a big mess taking the lower hose off to drain it, i was like wtf when i saw that.

Damn, I was driving my bro's 4.8L Silverado today and the pressure is the same as your old pump-30 hot, ~40 cruising. I might just take the oil pan off, pull the pressure relief plunger, deburr it, shim it, and see if that helps. I might try this first because there's no way i'm going to pull the front cover and not replace the cam while it's off.

iirc the radiators dont have a drain plug. thats why its a huge mess whenever you're doin a cam swap and such

That's weird, I guess only the older ones came with drain plugs. Both my '99 and '00 have them.

bigbob, i left the high pressure spring in the new pump, it came with a lower pressure spring also. and it is way stiffer than the spring that came out of my old pump,i dont have any use for that spring.i can send it to you if you want it, the 02 that i used to have had a drain on it, looks like more stuff that gm was trying to save money on. lol

                            I don't have one either

Used to own a FSC, now I just have my extremely old Buick.
Have some perspective please. Thank you.

Now that I think about it, I may have that same spring leftover from when I put a Melling in my '99. Let me check and see, if I can't find it, I'll give you a holler. Thanks!
