  • 350 TBI vs 350 Vortec MPG. Are they really that far apart?

I have been looking for another truck. Like the OBS chevy 1988-1999 I am trying to keep the initail expense down within reason as I dont use the truck much. I have been finding reviews that say the vortec 5.7 gets 19 MPG highway in a extended cab 4x4 and the TBI gets 14 Highway in the same truck.

    Any truth to this?

I can see the 5.3 or 4.8 variations getting better mileage, but the 5.7 seems odd to be so far apart.

I have 2 trucks with reasonably low mileage within $1000 in price. The 93 doesnt have the third door that (I really hate the 3rd door anyway) and has manual transfer case, the 98 has the third door and is puch button 4x4. So you see where this is going.

    What are your thoughts.

Same gears in each truck? Same size tires?

If so then the TBI will be very close to the vortec. Now stock for stock the vortec will be a bit higher, but for about $100 on the TBI engine you can pick up some MPG to make up that difference, where as with the vortec you would need to spend more, parts are more, the parts that do go bad are more, and the push button 4x4 is more prone to go out then the floor shift.

IMO I would buy the TBI truck, my 95 ECSB with just some longtubes and single 3" exhaust and a TB spacer was pulling down 17 MPG Hwy with 3.73's gears and 265/75/16 AT's on stock aluminum wheels. TBI is easy to work on, parts are cheap and easy to come by, very reliable, and easy and cheap to mod for some decent gains.

Vortec made more power...thats for absolutely certain.

But it came at the price of having that stupid poppet valve/spider injection system.

Re: 350 TBI vs 350 Vortec MPG. Are they really that far apart?

        350 TBI was 200HP/300TQ
        350 Vortec was 255HP/330TQ

More power and torque for sure, but higher parts costs such as the replacement for the poppet setup, intake manifolds gaskets (upper and lower), and sensors are more.

I have only owned 1 vortec and it drank gas, Mostly due to mods. But I have owned many TBI motors. Basic simple stupid to work on, Never need much attention to maintain , but the best fuel mileage I have ever gotten was a 1992 Z71 with a NV4500 trans. 3:73 gears. It got 16.5 highway running pretty hard. ( I dont know how to drive easy) I will use the truck for pulling my 16 foot enclosed trailer sometimes and general rtuck duty. Otherwise I ride a motorcycle every day.

A TBI getting 14mpg is sickly. I got 18mpg avg with a tired 305 pushing 32x11.50's and lame 3.42 gears. 20+mpg on the stock 225/75/16 and around the same with 235/85/16.

            305/350=same mpg.

TBI/Vortec = same mpg, vortec more power.

I would of thought that the vortec got a lot better of gas mileage??

Think I am going to stick with the TBI, Throw a set of vortec heads at it adn a small cam. Polish out the TBI and let it eat. Hard to beat the TBI for drop dead relaibility. Thanks everyone.

My brother's '94 K1500 Suburban 5.7 with 36" Iroks and 4.88 gears got 18 mpg highway from Virginia to Illinois.

My stock '96 K1500 Suburban rarely sees 13 mpg... mostly about 12.5 average

After you make a deal with someone, Dont decide to keep half the truck after the deal is made. Tends to scare buyers away.

Guy emailed me with a list of things he was taking off teh truck after we decided on a price .. I had to back away before he decided to keep the engine and transmission too.
