  • 95 Silverado idles fine, dies when you put it in gear

Could I get some help guys? I have a 95 Silverado K2500 with a 350, automatic. Theres 174,000 miles on the truck but only 15,000 or so on a crate motor according to the guy I bought it from last fall. The truck runs fine, idles fine, but when I put it in gear, it dies or almost dies. It seems to do it more in reverse than drive, but maybe that's my imagination. I just replaced the fuel filter and cap and rotor, and I don't really think I gained anything, it still does it. The old cap and rotor looked pretty crappy though. Anyway, I can't help but think its a sensor but I have no codes and the check engine light isnt on. I've done a search on here but haven't found the exact same problem. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Does it shimmy when it dies? Can you get it rolling at all? Could be your torque converter?

Check the wiring for the MAP sensor. I had the same problem on a 95 C2500 and one of the wires going from the MAP senor to the computer was bad.

      Here's a how to video.

Vikestand: No it doesnt shimmy, just dies...Robotic Junky: Thanks, I will check that. Anyone else have any ideas if it isnt something to do with the MAP sensor? Thanks everyone

It wouldn't hurt to check your fuel pressure, but doubt that's the problem.

Put the transfercase in neutral and try it if it does not stall its the torque converter.

i would check for a vaccume leak. You might also just unhook the battery and leat the computer reset. I had a similar problem on my wifes trailblazer and the battery thing did the trick!

You should only have a few vacuum lines. Check those first. Also, when is the last time you cleaned the throttle body?

i actually have a similar problem with my 94. Idles fine but when you put it into gear (m/t) and start goin down the road, at any speed, it wants to spit and sputter hear and there. You have to downshift, get the engine moving fast then shift back into the higher gear. I checked the codes and i got a 33 and 42. Low vacuum and Ignition control circuit error. About a week ago i had timed it and forgot to reset the ecm so i imagine thats where the 33 was coming from since the timing was off, the vacuum was screwed up. for a week its been missing while driving. pulled codes today and got 33 and 42. reset the ecm, and replaced the module and they both went away but it still misses while being drove. Not trying to thread jack but it seems like we have similar problems. LMK what you find out.

Most people spray carb cleaner around vacuum lines and gaskets (like intake manifold and throttle body). If you have a leak of either, the rpms for the motor will go up.

Most times that you have a vacuum leak on those its at the throttle body gasket. At least thats been my experience.

Ok great, thanks. I also forgot to say that it doesn't do it everytime, but at least half the time. And if you two-foot it, you can prevent it from dying.
