Z71 tOWING

    Hello,
    Just got a 2003 GMC Z71,1500 5.3L Auto. How do these tow?
    I will be towing a car trailer/race car on occasions.
    Any recommendations on Better braking, computer chip etc or is it fine in its stock form.

    One peice of advice I have to offer you is to make sure that you don't do any heavy towing in OD.

      What happens if I run it in overdrive?? Let me know where I can go to get more info?

      Do these trucks also have some type of a limiter on them?

      The truck does fine up to 100MPH then it acts like it wont go any faster. Feels like a speed limiter.

        What kind of race car are you towing? Drag or oval track?
        If it's big, then mob it...if it's fast,then drag it...its the simple rules of life.

          Yes there is a speed limiter - all vehicles have one these days and they generally cut off around 100-125mph. Its not like you need to be doing 100 with a trailer in tow anyway.

          the truck will tow your load just fine in stock form. There are a wide array of add ons you could instal to help performance. trailer brakes would certainly help in the slowing down dept.

          OD shouldnt be used to tow because the tranny will constantly be shifting in and out of OD as it tries to maintain speed, creating heat. This is more of a concern if you are pulling through hilly terrain.

            another smart invested would be a tranny cooler, the cooler you keep the tranny fluid the happier it will be.

            also, use the tow/haul button. It changes your shift points and makes it easier on your tranny while towing.

              BTW, your truck is a Sierra not a "Z71". That is only an suspention package (shocks, skidplates, and stickers). (Sorry, pet peeve)

              Quoting '01 manual:
              "If you have an automatic transmission, you can
              tow in DRIVE (D). You may want to shift the
              transmission to THIRD (3) or, if necessary, a lower
              gear selection if the transmission shifts too often
              (e.g., under heavy loads and/or hilly conditions).
              If you have a manual transmission and you are
              towing a trailer, it’s better not to use FIFTH (5)
              gear. Just drive in FOURTH (4) gear (or, as you
              need to, a lower gear). See “Tow/Haul Mode”
              in the Index."

                i would recommend the electric fan upgrade. it will keep your tranny fluid much cooler for those uphill 100 mph bursts with full trailor load.

                  No I wasnt actually towing the trailer going 100MPH. I am lucky to go over 65. I keep it safe on the road, then go Balls out on the track.

                  The car is an Enduro oval track car in Northern California.

                  I guess I couldn't get that one by you! I believe it is a $400 option on the Sierra. We could start a good debate on this forum deciding what it is you actually get for the $400. That will be another post.

                    Although, general public belives it something so in resale I think it might be helpful.

                      It is recommended that you install trailer brakes if you load is over 1000 lbs or more. I do alot of towing and it really makes a difference. And it might save your a$$. Other than that I always run out of OD whenever I tow anything over 1000 lbs.

                        I haul a 4500 lb tractor and trailer with mine and it is stock. No problems. Just take your time. I do have trailer brakes though.

                        Also, the suspension is a little weak so you might consider throwing some air bags on the rear. It will make the ride a lot better.

                          Along the same lines, Im going to be towing a boat thats prob more than 1000lbs down I95 all the way to the Florida Keys from NC. Should I turn on the Tow/Haul mode for the trip down or should I leave that little button alone. Truck is in the sig. Thanks fellas!

                              If you have factory tow pkg. with the 3.73 or 4.10 and with electric brake control you should have no problem. I tow a 6,000 lb. camper with my 02 4.8 and it does just fine, but I also use the Superchip towing program, use the tow/haul feature.
