Rear speakers in my Tahoe

I understand the rear roof speakers in my 98 Tahoe are 4 x 10's. Can I fit 6 x 9's in there? If so, is there much hacking to do?

Yes you can. I put 6x9's in the rear of my tahoe. There is not much cutting but you do have to cut. I will get some pictures up after the first of the year. The truck is at my girlfriends house in Oregon till I go back to school but after that I get you some pics

I looked closely at the rear roof speakers in my Kon yesterday, and poked around with the JL 6x9s i have in the house. It looks like the stock mounting plate is big enough to cut out to hold a 6x9, but the mounting depth might be more challenging. I was thinking of simply putting washers or something like that between the plate and the place the plate bolts to to give some extra room, but longer bolts may be necessary as well.

There is a fair amount of room between the mounting plate and the headliner, so the stock speaker covers could probably be reinstalled for a stealth look.

One concern might be the weight of the 6x9 being too much for the weakened bracket and the fact that it would be mounted with spacers as well. I'll be mulling it over and may get around to trying the install soon, but if anyone has any more ideas or experience with this, we'd love to hear it.

Mine fits just fine. I have a little piece of Dynomat behind the magnet of the 6x9's between the roof but other wise you cant tell the difference when you look at it unless you take the covers off.

you obviously had to open the hole in the stock bracket, right? did you have to space it downwards away from the roof at all?

I would be very interested in seeing some pics of how you did that. My 4x10's are blown and i've been thinking about custom mounting some speakers somewhere else. But if I can fit 6x9's in the roof I wont even bother.

I did have to cut the plate to fit the speakers but they fit just fine. I am not sure if there are spacers or not on the speakers I will check. As soon as I get back up to school (Jan. 5th) I will take pictures of it, my truck is at my gf's right now.

5x7's would be eaiser to fit in there.
Most 6x9's dont have enough clearance to fit up there.

If you remove the headliner you'll see that the metal brackets are secured with 2 10mm bolts, you can remove them and fab up some brackets that will bring the speakers down to gain clearance for the speakers you choose. You can sound proof the entire roof while at it.

Alright I know that it has been a long time. But I finally got the time to take some pictures of my rear speakers. I took out my headliner today so I thought that I should take some pictures for you guys while I'm doing it. So here they are, sorry again.

man, wish i had found this thread last weekend, but this is basically the same thing i did

i just got out my jigsaw, threw in a metal blade and cut the brackets to fit the 6x9s

taking the metal plates out isnt too bad, and yes, its a good idea to sound proof the roof while everything is apart ... just dont make the mistake i did, i bought some hardcore 6x9s -- which i love except for the magnet on the back of them is huge, therefore making the 6x9s sit/mount to where i cannot get the stock covers back on, oh well, but most over its an easy job, just make sure u have the plates held down when cutting them, that jigsaw will vibrate the hell outta ya

Yeup.
Thats probably why GM didnt put them in there.
Its also safer to hold down the bracket with a clamp/vice. Less chance of you cutting your finger off. Those unfortunately dont grow back

I have a pair of infinity reference 6x9's. They have a mounting depth of 3". Will they fit after I cut the bracket?

Also, how sturdy is the bracket? I know the bass was sweet with only the stock hu, but I thought of running my 100x2 amp to these speakers and take out my 12" sub for a cleaner look. Any thoughts?

Glenn, I believe that you will be just fine with the speakers. If you secure the bracket to the speaker enough the bass wont be an issue. I cant wait to see your set up, it sounds like its gonna be tight,

What i would do is just leave the rear roof speakers alone.
Just buy the 4ch and amp the front and door speakers.
You dont need 6x9's back there. 5x7's at the most.
