I hope everyone knows what I'm talking about...its the vents that let the pressure out of the cabin when youre closing your door...the ones on the back wall behind the rear seat...Ive come to realize they let way too much noise in so they have to go. How have people done this? Just take it off and screw some mdf around it or????

I covered mine in raam mat followed by ensolite. I usually always leave a crack in my windows anyway, so the cabin is never 100% sealed off. I saw a huge improvement in road noise after covering them over.

Re: Sealing off vents on the back wall in a NBS extended cab

I was thinking about taking it out and cutting it to a quarter of its size, seal off the 3/4 and putting polyfill on whats left of the vent. I guess I can go ahead and completely seal them off and try it like that for a while, and if its a big pain in the ass I could go to plan B and cut em up...All i have in my truck right now is my dash, front seats, door panels and headliner. No carpet or back seat and it made me realize how loud they really are. Ive heard some people say when they sealed em off it messed when their AC if it wasnt on recirculate and one person even said that it made their ears pop when they rolled their windows down...I will soon see. Hopefully I can do that some time tomorrow. Ill lay some mat down over the whole thing after I know what I'm going to do (seal it off completely or just partially).

I left mine open. Maybe I am seeing/noticing things that aren't there. When covered I notice that when your windows are down the wind is louder and blows more into the truck. I am a smoker so this is a bad thing for me. Just me

Cody, you live in Texas man, its like Arizona, we are not 25,000 feet up in the sky in an airplane. Your ears wont pop. Plus as much as you dont want to hear this, even after all of that $$, time, sweat, tears, and deadener you put in your truck...it still is not going to be 100% sealed off dude. Besides even the summertime, I generally drive with a small crack in the windows...

yea, but the reason why your ears pop at 25000 feet is because of a difference of air pressure. If you have the ac on in your car, even if partially sealed, youll have a difference in cabin pressure than you will outside the car.

I sealed mine off in my '99 with Dynamat and it made the doors harder to close. I cut a small slit in them to let the pressure out. With the interior in I didn't notice much difference either way.

thats what I'm thinking, his interior is out so of course they seem loud. If it was really a source for excessive noise, GM would have millions of complaints (and I dont think they do).
the seat and the carpet mat on the back wall muffle the sound.

I certainly cant hear any noise from back there now (tires and exhaust) but even before I modded the truck I remember it was very quiet in the cabin.

Besides, Exalted, thats what all the money in audio is for......... getting rid of strange noises

Re: Sealing off vents on the back wall in a NBS extended cab

after having them sealed up for a couple days now, its MUCH quieter...around 4dB @ 65mph. Lot less wind noise. I have noticed a difference in shutting the door. Now its about as hard as my old 96 truck, so not a big deal at all...

Very pleased, would recommend doing so with everyone. I'm going to end up taking off the mdf and paint it with some kind of sealer so it doesnt soak up water then putting it back on.

Re: Sealing off vents on the back wall in a NBS extended cab

When I sealed mine my doors wouldn't close properly, so I had to hop in and really close the door hard, what happened next was really weird.

My ears popped pretty good due to the pressure, but the pressure was so great it created a time warp due to pressure in the space continuum and it f'ed up life as we know it, my grandma ended up being my sister...

Just an FYI, don't seal off dem vents

Re: Sealing off vents on the back wall in a NBS extended cab

are you talking about the truck in your sig? If so, youre comparing a OBS single cab to a NBS extended...much much different.

I'll get some pictures up soon. Not much to it though, took some scrap MDF and cut it out to size and screwed it over the vent with some chaulking on the back. I'm going to take em out and paint over it so the MDF doesnt soak up water but other than that, pretty straight forward

Re: Sealing off vents on the back wall in a NBS extended cab

Good deal Cody, glad it worked out for you. I'm thinking of giving it a try.... starting with a majority of it sealed then all of it.

One question Cody, and others with nbs's and fair amount of deadening. Do you guys get some slight wind noise that seems to be coming from the A-pillars? My p/u is fairly quiet and the only thing that I hear now is wind noise and/or regular turbulence right around the a-pillars. I've taped off the eniter winshield gasket and the noise didn't get any quieter. It's not loud at all, I'm just thinking that as the road noise and rattles got quieter the regular wind/tubulence just sounds louder.

Sorry for the thread jack Cody.
