ok i have a 200w amp and two 8" 400w subs. my friend told me to hook the -L to the -R wires together on the amp and the +L to the +R wires together on the amp. he said this will make them hit harder. well it did but if i leave it on for a whole song the amp goes into protected mode and shuts off. why is it doing this? do i need a bigger amp? thanks in advance.

That sounds a little stupid if you ask me. Is the amp 1 channel, 2 channel or 4 channel? The reason it keeps shutting off is because it is protecting itself from catching on fire.

Generically speaking that could be a bad idea the way you have it.

I dont see why your would not have one sub wired to the right and the other sub wired to the left. I think you will toast your amp quickly with the way you have it set up. But im not an audio expert

most people around here do have it like this. i just done it to see how it sound and belive it or not it sounds great and hits hard. i done a few adjustments to my amp and got it all working now so thanks anyway.Originally Posted by GoCougs

Yeah I am pretty sure you are just bridging it down to a lower ohm, be careful not to overheat the amp
yea i had that problem at first, the amp was getting really hot. i just adjusted some of the settings on the amp and it is all fine now.

Thats not how you bridge an amp though... If its a 2 Channel amp then it should say which ones to bridge... Most of the time its Left Chaneel negative and Right Channel positive... Im almost sure your woofers are 4 Ohm woofers... Your pretty much giving that amp a 2 Ohm load in bridged mode which it cannot handle... Your going to kill the amp so I would just put it back to the way it was before or buy a biggger amp...
What amp is it? Brand and Model Number?

M5, Is there any 2 Channel Amps that are stable at 2Ohms Bridged?

Yes, not sure if there are too many new ones that are. The zx475ti that I have in my closet is a 4chn that is 2ohm stable bridged on both halves, but there are a ton of others.
The real question is why not buy a mono amp then? 2chn bridged = 1chn at 2ohm and pretty much all mono amps will do that.

A 2 channel amp that is 2ohm stable in stereo can not be bridged into a 2 ohm load, its causes the amp to see a 1ohm. (very bad) If you wanted to bridge the amp into a 2ohm load it would have to be 1ohm or lower in stereo. M5 has the right idea, if your looking at getting another amp for your subs get a 1 channel amp.

While that is usually true, some can as an example the ti series from PG. However, the amp doesn't see a 1 ohm load in the scenario you painted. It still can only see a 2 ohm load as that is what driver impedance you are connecting to it.
