I have seen a few set up's now where people will feed a sub way more power than recommended (EX: 800w to a 400w RMS sub, or 600w to a 300w RMS sub). I was just wondering, how smart is that? I have always went be the RMS of the sub and stayed no more than 15% more watts than that, and it sounds fine. It just makes me wonder if I should step my amp up. Right now ive got a Hifonics amp feeding my Infinitys 375w, and the RMS on the subs is 350w. But Max power on them is like 1400, so I wonder if it would be safe to give them, say, 600w?? Just wondering, I dont know enough about car audio to answer myself....

Then you should know, just because you have the capability of 600w, doesn't mean you'll be using that the entire time, and you'll also know, if you do, it's going to damage something.

Headroom on an amplifier is wonderful. It will improve its dynamic range by always have more power than it needs, which keeps everybody happy. Its not how much power, its how you use it.

Figure out what impedance you will be running the amplifier at, find out the RMS wattage at that impedance. I run a 10" L7 ported being pushed by a ZX750.1 and the sub only asks for 450W RMS ported. It works wonderfully. And keep this in mind, its better to over power your subs a little rather than underpower them. Because the amplifier will cause the signal to clip at high volumes, and that is the leading cause of blown subs.

    Ok cool, thanks.
Right now, my Infinity's are rated at 400w RMS and my Hifonics is giving 750w @ 1ohm (375 per sub).
I want to step up the amp to give them about 600 each. The thing that kicks my ass, is the amp has about 30 minutes of use but I got it in December last year, and for $10 more I could have bought a bigger amp with the power I want. At the time, I only knew to go by the RMS power of the sub, never thought it was possible to add more power. STUPID ME!! Now I can sell the amp back. just have to either get some use out of it or try to sell it locally but lose alot of money on it.

    Hi
I don’t have so much idea regarding this subject. Just I suggest you to take steps accordingly.
