It could if there's not enough air space or flow around the unit. All the head units I've had get fairly hot after awhile, but I haven't had any problems with them.
x2...allow adequate airspace and there should be no problems...stuff it somewhere and thats a diff story

Well mine is in the stock location, its a single din. But I do have 3 pairs of RCA outputs and speaker wires for the mids and highs coming back from the amplifiers back there, so my HU is kinda stuffed in. All of a sudden at times when i would be listening to it the volume would be like cut in half, and it would shut down automatically, it would tell me good bye and everything as if i pressed the power button. Then I would wait 10 seconds and it would power back up. It did this for about 3 weeks every once in a while, but now it doesnt do it anymore. Its a Panasonic if that helps any :] Never will I buy another again.

Mine gets pretty hot in the winter due to its being just below the air vents in the center of the dash. No problems in the summer but in the winter once it gets hot the display on my Eclipse starts flashing like a strobe light.
