Shopping for a double din unit for my 04 silverado, and my old man is thinking about replacing the stock unit in his new super duty

We have been cruising websites and stores for the last couple weeks and have a few ideas of what we are looking for

I came across this tonight though, and it got me to wondering...

    Pioneer AVIC-Z3

I have noticed that this unit has an HDD for map purposes... does any one know if are units that have HDD's in them for music purposes? I never thought of it till i saw this and that that's what i might before... and now i like the idea of it.

On that same note, if i bought a small external HDD like this, Passport HDD and loaded it up with music and videos, would i be able to play those files (and sort threw the sub folders) VIA the head unit?

Any advice or experience is appreciated, as this sort of stuff is brand new to me, and the sales guys at the local stereo shops are useless...

Number 1 listen to NOTHING about what car audio shops or stores say. Usually they are less informed then you and are tryin to sell the most expensive unit. Im not sure about that unit, but i know on some you can use a external hard drive set up for music. Some also allow you to insert a SanDisk card loaded with music. ill check out the z3 n see what i pull up

yah i know not to trust those bastards... specially these days where sales means keeping your job... Just what bugs me is they can't tell me WHY they are selling me it, just that "its the best"...

I don't like flash cards very much, as that means i will always have to be uploading songs and taking songs off to fit more, i might as well just use my IPOD for that. I want to be be able to load up all my music, and even my movies which would be a BONUS

i agree. BY FAR my favorite double dins are pioneers. I have no problem w the d3 so i think im going to get one as i cant justify the price for the new z3s as compared to finding a new d3 for around 400 on ebay. like hick pointed out there are some advantages to the z3 tho.

Yeah the D3 is a great a unit.. The maps are easy to use, the screen is nice and clear even with lots of fingerprints... I look at a lot of different units some had a few more features but just didn't have the quality

Do they seriously make SD cards that big? holy ****, i need to get out from under my rock more often... are they reasonable priced at least?

So these unit allow movies to be played off the SD card, as well as sort threw different files on screen correct? thats a MUST. I want to be able to select different folders and browse there them...

haha i wasnt talkin about u watching it, passengers! but it also makes it so u can adjust navigation on the fly. the 32 gig sd cards are like 200 bucks new, so egay it and find one for 100 used which is cheaper then buying an external hard drive. Im gonna have to look to see which units use this option as its been a while since ive looked into them. Im also lookin to see what i can pull up for double dins that have a HD for music or the external HD plug in. ill get back to you on both items.

thank you. Him and i are in no big rush at all... just some thing we have been putting some thought into.

He is wanting to install a camera or two for his fifth wheel and the soon to be jet skis behind it so the need for a screen comes in

I want one, cause well i am punk ass kid who wants the biggest, best and fanciest stuff whether i need it or not, haha (i take after my old man).

I to am looking at a backup camera though. I am also towing some thing and am CONSTANTLY changing trailers... and as good as i am backing up, getting it right in the first shot would make life so much easier... cause i SUCKS having to sqeeuze between my house and truck every time i am trying to pull out/put in my jet skis...

I like the idea of a external hard drive more then a SD, for the simple fact its bigger and i like having all or most of my movies with me at all times. how ever, is there is any sort of lag, both sound and video as a result of the HDD, screw it...

Also i am curious, the sirius aspect of these things. I have an external unit i have mounted into my dash. Do these head units allow you to pause rewind and set favorites like the externals units do? I know some don't but have yet to see one that does... but i haven't looked all to closely... and back to the orgainl point, the sales guys know **** all

My friend had the Avic-Z1 or 2. It had the HDD for navigation and for music.

Re: Double Din Units. Any With HDD's?

The Z3 comes with like 10gb of maps and 20 gb for music (Something like that)

So you actually can put music on it. I'm sure theres more out there that does that...I believe JVC had one out as well.

USB is the next big thing in radios...even almost bottom of the line pioneers are coming with it. You can plug in USB powered external HDDs like the one you posted and it will read the music off of it.

Re: Double Din Units. Any With HDD's?

I just got a pioneer avic F90BT, but there is also the F700BT. They are double din navigation units, one with dvd the other with cd. They use the SD cards and they have ipod hookup and usb hookup. I got an 8GB SD card off ebay for $14. You can't beat that. I think it was around $40 for a 16GB card if you need that much space. The 32GB cards are the biggest they come so they are way overpriced.
