Well, it's getting cold in Minnesota now and this is my daily driver year round so...

What does everyone think about remote starters? good?, bad?

I had one on my Chev Lumina and it built up alot of carbon. Maybe I let it idle TO MUCH, I used it all the time, summer or winter.

    What's everyone's opinion?

Considering what I've heard about the whole aftermarket radio. It's probably to expensive to put in my :fsc: anyways. I'm sure they would have to by-pass 500 things to make it work.

When I had one put in my Lumina back in 1998 (Best Buy) it was free installation. I go in there expecting no charge and he says do you want your heat to work without the keys? Isn't that the point of the thing? Well I had to pay extra for that. That's Best Buy for you...:bop:

WTF? pay extra to have the heat work? why dont you just get remote start...then leave your heat on when you turn the truck off....then when you get in..it will start and start the heat...

i've had my remote start on my truck for 2 years and when i had the envoy i went through the same thing...with onstar, and everything, they were all dumbfounded...did some research, and it would work, but it would have costed about 500 for the kit i wanted with the alarm and everything installed by best buy. i flipped the bill for my truck, but not for the envoy, because it wouldn't be in our family long. i'd say it's definately worth it to have, wether it's for cold, hot climate, it's a big bonus. also a fun toy sometimes anyhow....get all the relays and let them do it, don't do it yourself, because then the warranty is void unless you are a certified installer.

remote start does not turn on accessories normally and has to be wired to do so. i've had my remote start for a while now and still love it. It pisses off my friends everytime i remote start it and someone has to make some comment with "lazy" in it...but i don't see how i lived without it

I've had it in my truck for about 4 years now and loved it..... but once the carb went in, I can't use it cause the computer can't tell when the truck starts and it makes the starter keep running. I miss it, especially after this winter...... and 33 deg out this morning is not looking too good for this winter either

I've got one, installed it myself. Took a while to make all the connections with solder and heat shrink tubing instead of the cheesy plastic crimp things, but at least I know they will not be giving me trouble later on. I've gotten quite a few people to do doubletakes in parking lots when they hear the truck start then see me get in later. Now I need to find a way to get it to rev the engine from the remote...

I had one on every car or truck that I've owned. I won't live without it! No scraping snow off, I just leave the defroster on, and by the time I get to my truck the windows are cleared of frost or snow. I got mine from Walmart or K-mart, the Bulldog brand. I not to hip on electrical stuff but was really easy to install..

It seems that with all of the electronics in our vehicles, install should be a plug and play application. How much splicing is there?

i love my remote start, not only in the winter but as a toy too. i love confusing people when they see it start with noone inside i had a bulldog kit first and it gave me some trouble now and then so i sold it and moved up to a viper system, 1 year plus and not a single issue yet

xlong4x4 - i've never heard of a plug and play kit. these systems are pretty easy to install. all that's really necessary is some splicing of some key wires unless you're putting in a starter kill and security system, then it starts to get complicated...

I've had a remote start in my last 2 trucks. This time around, I went with the Ungo (Clarion) MS2007.........good and bad. The good (cool) part is that it is a 2 way FM unit, meaning the range is incredible (1/4 mile!!), and it pages you when the truck is being tampered with, when it's running, etc. I can even set it to start at the same time every morning.

The price at my local Clarion dealer was $650 installed...

I bought mine on ebay for $200 and installed it myself.

I can't wait to get a remote starter in mine. My friend is a senior car audio installer at Best Buy. he can get the the Viper 550 w/ remote start for $150, and we'll do the install at his house...so no labor charges. So i'll probably be getting it done here in the next few weeks before winter really kicks in. I hate going to the truck at 5am in the middle of winter and having to wait for the heater to warm up.

I'm looking on ebay and noticing those 2way pager systems for under $200. Are they generally crap, or decent deals? Also, will any of these work with my diesel? thanks
