1985 Pickup. Dual Tanks. Original owner

On both tanks the fuel gauge has gone nutty. The gauge reads way high. the vehicle runs out of fuel at better than 1/4 tank. and when you fill it the gauge is way past Full.

How can the Gauge go that far out? I can see if it always read low, then I would guess that I had a thin wire someplace but this gauge is reading as if the wires are closer to being grounded.

Maybe your float is sticking in the tank?

You have a short in the wiring, or kinda rare for both, but both of your fuel sending units are bad or they have lost there ground. That is very common.

I have a single tank with the same problem, and I can tap the tank on the bottom and then it reads right. I have a bad ground, which I'll fix when I remove the truck bed.

Since both are doing it, I would look for bad wiring. If they occured at different times, then it is possible that you have to bad units or bad grounds. I KNOW A LOT OF people who'll let one be bad and run it til the gas is gone, and then switch to the good tank, hahahahaha, is that what you did?

the gas gauges in these year trucks are junk also. I've had similar problems with many of them. Sometimes it's the gauge or just the 'push' connectors on back of gauge. DAVE

I have dual tanks on old red...never made trouble in 21 yrs... could it be the ground at the selector switch? (chase the pink wire from ea. sending unit to the switch-check ea. gnd also)... but if both tanks are giving bad signals... check primarily the switch for the dual tanks then the guage itself...

My dads '89 V3500 had a similar problem - both tanks would read up to 1/4 on the gauge when completely full and empty when completely empty but never go above 1/4 on the gauge for either. Tried replacing a sender, that didn't work, now going to attempt replacing gauge cluster.

My 82 is doing the same funny stuff too.

I believe it is the fuel tank selector valve.

It's been going on for a while now but is getting worse.
Both right and left side will read WAY past Full when switching tanks.
I gotta switch back and forth a few times to get a reading.

with the right tank empty (dry), I switch to the left tank.
Within 100 miles the left is empty.
But switching back to the right it has 1/2 tank.
I believe the left is feeding back to the right side via the bypass line.

The right tank goes empty at 1/4
the left goes emtpy way below empty.
Both read Way past full until the selector switch is cycled a few times
The selector switch was replaced, still does the same crap.

My 85 is off at times. I ran out of gas 200 ft from the gas station still showing gas in her. I knew I was low but not out. Mine goes way above full sometimes and I suspect the ground.

Re: Gas Gauge way off 1985

    Hello, first time posting here.

I recently bought a 1985 Chevy C10 that is having this same issue (When FULL, needle points at the 5 O'Clock. EMPTY is near 3/4 full mark). However, the previous owner removed the passenger side fuel tank. Is this an easy fix? If so, what do I need to do? Thanks in advance!

I still have not found a cure. I am too lazy to pull teh tanks and clean the resistor windings on teh sender. My guess is that is the issue.
