As a lot of ya'll know, I recently picked up, a.k.a. stole a 1984 K5. It has a carb'd 305/700R4 combo and honestly runs alright. But it needs a lot of vacuum hoses fixed and the carburetor is worn out.

On a sadder note, my tRusty 91 K1500 has died. It has a TBI 350 and a good 700R4 (the K5 doesn't have reverse). I love my 91 but as a lot of people have told me the truck is really too far gone to mess with. Its in really rough shape and the K5 is actually in a lot better shape.

I haven't completely decided to abandon the K1500 but i'm leaning towards it, its a very hard decision for me to make.

Anyway, what i'm thinking about doing is taking the entire TBI system off the K1500 and putting it on the K5. I figure this will eliminate the carb issue and a lot of the vacuum systems on it. What do ya'll think? I don't really have the money to plop down on a new carb right now and the TBI would improve fuel milage and driveability and would help off road in off-camber situations also.

Ideas? Tips from people who've done it before? I know basically what's involved but I haven't ever undertaken it myself.

This should work you'll need the intake tbi setup ecu
and corresponding wiring and maybe some sensors.

I took the wiring harness out of a 90 k2500 and put into my 85 c10. It's really not that bad if you know about wiring. The hardest part for me was finding an in line fuel pump that would run it.

which inline did you end up using? i was gonna snag the stock pump out of my K1500...that's what it'd all be coming of of

I ended up using a holley blue inline. The 1 problem you will have using the in-tank pump in your k5 is that the gas tank is not baffled for the fuel injection. I finally bought a gas tank, sending unit and pump for an 87 c10.

steal the good tranny from your 1500 and sell it off for parts to fund a 350 or a big block for your k5 a small motor like that doesnt belong in a k5 lol.

Re: 1984 K5 Blazer convert to TBI?

yea, thats kind of the plan right now. might already have a sale in the works. i did more research today and it appears i might have the dreaded <cough>2.73 gears<cough> in this one, like my old 83 K1500 had. but this one sure moves a lot better than the K1500 did...even though it has the same motor...

Re: 1984 K5 Blazer convert to TBI?

Yeah, the holley blue worked fine for me. It's just a little on the loud side. Nothing terrible, but at an idle you could hear it humming. I probably could have quieted it down by insulating it from the frame more but I just went with in tank style. If you go through with the tbi swap I still have the used holley pump around.

no Brandon, it has the dreaded 2.73's. GQ1...standard axle ratio. back in 1984 the standard axle ratio with the gas-powered K5 was 2.73s...aargh

I had the same inclination for one of my oobs so I took everything off my parent's '88 burb. So far the parts have been sitting in the same rubbermaid box for about two years. I hope you actually do the swap. Best of luck.

You will really like the TBI setup on the LE9 305 in your 1984. Just make sure you secure a 305 chip for it. You can even run the stock knock sensor that is in your current 305. This was the first swap on my van. TBI'd LE9 and it made 191 RWHP @ 4,600 and 268 RWTQ @ 3,200. More HP and TQ than the 350 TBI that replaced it made. Stock engine except for a Federal Mogul CS1014R cam, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and the TBI. Stock manifolds and Y-pipe as well. High flow cat and magnaflow single in/dual out muffler.

Running the 305 chip, my LE9 engine liked 14.25 psi fuel pressure and 6* advance.

I swapped the TBI van harness (removed the pins from the firewall connector and put them into my existing connector with no cutting or splicing), fuel lines, and fuel tank.

The mid to late 80's carb systems are quite crazy to look at. Especially the CCC (computer controlled carb) systems like on my 88 Caprice.

I'd take the stuff out of the K1500 for it. Because you're going to need a new motor anyway. based on your story of what happened to it. I usually find longblocks for sale moreso than bare blocks and bottom ends. So it's probably gonna better that way anyway.
