hey guys i got a 86 chevy k10 halftun longbed, im gonna buy an 8 inch lift kit for it but i have a set of axles out of a 3/4 ton truck. im gonna put those in since theyre greared better and a little tougher. but do i still buy a lift kit for a half ton which i think would be 52 inch springs? or do i buy something different. also i should have to move the perches on the frame i dont think is that correct? thankss

Yes you need the halfton kit. No moving of perches. The axles attach to springs the exact same way as on a 1/2 ton.

Yea, sure. Get 4" lift 52's for the font and 4" lift 56's with a shackle flip for the back. Same exact setup i'm running on my '81. Super flexy and the ride is plush.

    Re: 86 k10 8 inch lift kit

I bought Superlift springs and they're ~$180 a piece from Summit. Add about $40 for bushings and it comes to $400 a set, like you said. To cut costs you could run stock 56's in the rear with the shackle flip and a small block(2-3"), since you probably don't need all of 8" of lift back there.

On the front of my truck I used DIY4X's B52 kit($165) but you could save there too by just switching the stock hangers around. Shackles for the front should be $30 or less. You'll also want to get some limiting straps and bumpstops to prevent over-stretching/compressing anything.

Sooo, I'll just throw some numbers out there
    $400 springs
    $65-180 Shackle flip
    $30 shackles
    $100 u-bolts
    $50 fasteners
    $90 brake lines
    $80 bumpstops/limit straps
    $150 steering correction
    $100 stock 56's
    $40 blocks
    $160 shocks

    Total approx. $1320

Of course it can be done for more or less, but that just gives you an idea. What all comes in the Skyjacker kit?

    Edit: forgot shocks, lol

I'd go with the kit, it's a hell of a lot easier than hunting parts down and having to fab a lot of things to make them work correctly.

    Re: 86 k10 8 inch lift kit

It's kind of worth it. Wonder how tall the lift blocks are? I bet the add-a-leaves are those short rigid 1/2" pieces of crap too. Guess you can solve those issues with a shackle flip...

You'll most likely need your front driveshaft extended for the it to remain in safe operating range. CJTatton on ebay has good deals on new driveshafts.

You'll need some brake lines too...

    Re: 86 k10 8 inch lift kit

If I remember correctly anything above a 6" suspension lift requires more steering corrections too? The max for only doing the minimal drop pitman arm and draglink was 6" I thought?

It's been a while so I could be off but check into that also just to be safe. I had three mid-80's K10's and K20 and seem to remember something along those lines when I was going to go bigger than a 6" lift.

    Re: 86 k10 8 inch lift kit

I'm not totally sure either man. I just seem to remember that above the 6" lift the steering angles are really extreme and it requires more than just the equipment that comes with the kit. I could totally be wrong though. I am positive that around the 10" kit range it is necessary to re-work the steering linkage but not positive about the 8". Just wanted to tell you to check it out because your price could increase substantially if the steering corrections are needed for safety.

Six inch you need at least a raised steering arm, ideally the steering arm and drop pitman arm, anything higher I wouldn't even bother without going to highsteer.

JMO, but I'd do crossover steering for anything bigger than 6" of lift.

You don't necessarily need to buy that kit, you can buy all the parts separately through different companies, but you'll need everything that kit comes with as well as a 2WD steering box.

It would steer like a bag of **** and wear out TRE and drag links like crazy.
