So I bought this 1964 C10 because it was the right price and i see alot of potential in it and I hope to ditch the I6 in it for a 350 or bigger. I really want a all out pro-street style truck but i was thinking of bagging it insted.

My biggest question is should I keep the 4-speed(stump pullin granny gear) or just put in a auto trans like a turbo 350 with the engine swap?

Should I take out the ac stuff, its all i can do in the parking lot of my apartment

..Huh? You ask questions about a pretty big project then say you have no room to work on it? Kinda confusing lol.

If you are planning on getting any kind of HP out of what-ever moter you put in that thing, do a tranny swap. I wouldn't keep that stock tranny in it unless that is what you really want in it.

You answered your own question by calling the tranny a "stump puller." It is not a race tranny, never was and never will be. It is meant to do heavy towing. You pair it up to a 350 and try to go to the drags, you'll tear something up. You cruise around town with it, and you'll have the SLOWEST 350-powered truck around. (But you could probably pull the empire state building off it's foundation!)

Drop in a auto. You COULD drop in newer manual tranny, but those can get expensive and you'll have to update your clutch from mechanical to hydrallic (most likely.)

The orange truck is freakin' awsome. Hadn't seen this one before. Exactly what I plan on doing to my 65.

As for the trans, I would drop in a later model auto-overdrive. You'll get some better gas mileage with it.

For the pro street thing you should make it look like the orange truck but on 15's with skinnies and fatties. Thats what I am doing with my 85.

I would say reserch about swaping out the 6 for the 8.

Look got a v8 of your choice, if oyu stick with carb it would be alot easyer for the swap as all you ahve to do is wire up the ignition and the coil and your done.

As for the trans I would find a automatic colum to swap out so you can use a later model auto of your choice, I would personally go with a turn key crate 350 with a tci TH-350 trans.

Find a friend with a garage to work in.

granted you could go to a junkyeard or used and be at the mersy of it not working when your finished, so I would say go with new stuff.

Dont want to do it a second time and have it add up to the price of new parts now do you?

You could alwase get a shop to do the work for you but tha twouldent be fun now would it?

EDIT:oh and as for wanting more power out of it for whatever your going for you could alwase go with forced induction? spray? whatever.

    Brakes will be your friend.

As for the rear end I have no idea, I know nothing of the chevy rears

I apreciate the advice but I was asking because would'nt it be better to have a manual trans to take to the drags? Most of you guys said switch to an auto?

I plan on getting pics of both my trucks in a few days because i dont own a digital camera.

My mom and I plan on getting a house before winter time that includes a garage for me btw. Thats why i don't have one now and i also don't plan on doing any of this work until i get back from the army so i have some money in case anyone was wondering.

Right now Iam just trying to soak up info and plan for the future and do whatever i can now to get my truck to where i want it.

Im a bit confused you have a 64 with an I6 and it has ac on it ?
If its factory ac and it came with the I6 you may want to rethimk removing that system I have never seen a 64-66 with the I6 and had the AC option.

Just the facory air (if it is factory) can bring a good price.

It may not be the norm but ther are some speed parts for the old 250 6cyl.

Have fun with it and if you need an links for parts let me know I have many catalogs and links for 60-66 parts.

Regarding the transmission, most people agree it's easier and cheaper to get an automatic to hook up and be consistent than it is with a stick.

Its pritty hard to push in a clutch when you got a really strong clutch, and dayling it would get old.

So when i do switch the transmission the shift selector will have to come through the floor, does this mean i can put in big rachet shifter?

I'm with him /\ I would price the shifter and a new column. If you want to stay cheaper go to a junk yard and pull a column.

With the JY you got to remember that you need to swap out your ignition switch, and thats gonna be a bitch, unless you want to spent the money to get a key made for that switch then thats gonna cost.

theres a lot of options out there it just which one is easyer for you?

The switch sucks to change but that would already be bolted to the new one. The key holder is what I think you are thinking of, and it is easy you just have to pull the wheel to get to it.
