I'm thinking about picking up a 72 C10 shortbed as a project, but I have a pretty small garage. Anyone know what the overall length was on those trucks?

That seems a bit short....Im talking overall length, not wheelbase.

For comparison, a 2001 RCSB chevy is 203" overall length. I think a 72 would be closer to 203 than 140....

67-72 SWB trucks have a 115 inch wheelbase
67-72 LWB trucks have a 127 inch wheelbase

    Actually...
That was me going to my garage.
    Getting my tape measure.
Going out to my true old body style truck.
Placing the tape holder in a bed stake.
Pulling out the tape to the front of the truck.
Looking at the number and adjusting for bed stake from rear of truck.
Minus the 2 feet for his 6' bed compared to my 8' bed.
    Then rolling tape measure up.
    Putting tape measure in garage.
Coming back inside to my computer and typing in the number I ended up with.

Then to find these smart ass comments from people like yourself posted after I actually went out and measured, not just gave worthless wheelbase numbers, as they do not account for the edge of the truck to the center of the wheels. I gave a realistic number (that I now showed how I came up with) to the poster as he requested.

But yes, I think that I have a pretty damned good idea how long it is thank you very much. My number is probably a few inches long (but not much - better to be slightly over than short) of the overall length of the truck, as the poster wanted.

Don't like it, go get a true old body style and measure it and see what you come up with smart ass.

He is not asking for wheel base, he is looking for overall length. IE the part where he is wondering if his garage is big enough... That might be the informational clue for you there.

Now back to the original poster. If you can clear 15' go for it.

Hey Smartass, settle down and note my use of smilies in my earlier reply to you.

    Also note his last statement:

I was clarifying the information I gave him may be the overall length and was not wheelbase.

    Thanks for coming

    Re: 72 C10 Size

Getting back on track, I've been searching for the information online since my books are at home.

So far It looks like a 1972 LWB pickup measures 207 3/4 inches from end to end. I'm still looking for actual SWB specs

    Re: 72 C10 Size

I have never seen a 'full size' truck measure 140" or a hair under 12' that came from the factory...
Maybe mini's... So that IS the wheelbase not the overall length.

Just a quick math thing... it will be in the high 14' to low 15' range.
    15X12= 180 = 15'. your provided 207-24(bed difference)= 183

See now how hard was that to do?
Seems I was not far off at all huh?

So I repeat myself that if you can clear 15' with ease, your good.

    Re: 72 C10 Size

Not any harder than realizing a smilie = sarcasm

yes, that inital number of 140" does seem pretty short. I went with the first page I found online, which was wrong.

I see a 1973 SWB pickup measures 191.3" overall. It's a safe bet that the 1971 and the info above is good to go

    Re: 72 C10 Size

Thanks for the info guys, I figured a classic was sure to be longer than an 01, but I guess not. If the 72 long bed is 208" and the wheelbase is 12" longer, I would assume the short bed is 196" overall (unless they added bed length behind the wheels on a long bed). 196" would fit comfortably in my garage.

Joe, if you run across actual numbers in your books at home, please post them up for me. I would assume that dimension should be basically the same for any 67-72 sb.

I just went through all of my manuals, the only truck it gives overall dimensions for is a panel/suburban.

    Re: 72 C10 Size

The overall frame dimension for the SWB C10 is 179.24" so you figure about another 6-9" for bumpers (depending on sport or step) and you get about 189" (15'-9") overall.

What I want to know is the size of the garage. Its one thing to get a vehicle in,its another to be able to work on it. Working a jack or a creeper without space is a bear. Pulling an engine is worse.Standing back to admire your work,,impossible. RW

if the cab roof inside is good then it would be good for a project.
as far as the motor if it is the one that came in the truck then it is not a 283. could be a 307 or a 350. the last year for a 283 was 66.

Not to be arguementative but the 283 was used thru 67,I had one. Might save someone from getting a surprise. RW
