as was mentioned a few times in this post, there was a change in the hoods around the 79 model year. i'm pretty sure it was a RMC (Rolling Model Change) which means some 1979's got it, some didn't.

although, this chart says at the bottom (this came from a magazine back when these trucks were still being produced) that the detail started in 1977...

no, that came out of either Custom Classic Trucks, Sport Truck, or a magazine called Chevy Truck right around 2000. i have that issue around here somewhere, just never noticed the hoods before. i've been stuck in 81+ land for so long, never really paid these any attention.

Theres nothing gaudy about the hood trim, it adds class and false age to the truck

My '77 must have been made from left over parts; it didn't have the extra detail on the hood, nor the grille with the turn signals incorporated. They were seperate like the '75-'76. I remember the day my dad brought it home brand new, and when I was old enough to drive it was my first car.

other than its huge and chrome... you'll find plenty more of your style of class in the JC Whitney catalog. most men over 60 should be able to help you select the proper accessories for your truck.

I don't think this chart is correct. First of all, the 77 and 78 did not share the same headlight/turn signal setup of the 79. It wasn't until 79 that the turn signals up front became integrated into the chrome trim around the headlight.

Second, the hood detail was not a standard feature until 1979 and 1980.

I have some evidence proving this, too!

Here is an advertisement from the '77 model year - note that not only are the turn signals different from the 79, but note that it has the regular style hood:

Here is an advertisement from the '78 model year - note that not only are the turn signals different from the 79, but note that it TOO has the regular style hood:

Now, here's where the changes happen - 79! From 73-87.com, an assembly line picture of the 1979 trucks. Note that this hood DOES IN FACT have the extra detail lines in question. It's hard to see, but they are defnitely there. Also, the new turn signal bezels are introduced. 73-87.com also lists this as the year for the different hood:

Here is a picture from the 1980 GM ads, and it too has the stylized hood of the 79 but with the different front end:

Here are a few pictures I've taken in person - my 78 with original hood:

This 79 Suburban with original hood - note the stylized ridge over the grill:

SO, the answer to this question is:

In 1979 and through 1980, original Chevy trucks will have the different, stylized hood. If a truck made before 79 has it, then it was probably just a parts swap...

yea, i believe ya man. the GM ads hold more water to me than the magazine article...not to mention i've owned 11 of these trucks and never had a truck older than '78 that had the "newer old hood"

If I can get my hands on one, it wont be chrome when I'm done with it. Theres not much in a JC Whitney catalog that I like. I'm not trying to rice out my truck with JC, Lund and APC crap. I dont see the problem with being a lil different. You might not like it, but I dont hafta not like it.
