    Is it a aftermarket tach?...if so what type?

    Sounds like it might be broken, i would try to replace it.

    Assuming your wiring didn't come undone, it's most likely something internal. I've had 2 factory tachs rebuilt for my trucks at a cost of about $115/ea. I had mine done at Deluxe Speedometer in Denver (they're on the web). Another option I've heard of is "The Tach Man". I believe he's also online.
