This is a discussion on syntec oil within the Duramax Forum forums, part of the General Discussion category; Have to do my first oilchange tommorrow and dont know what oil the dealer ran in it or the last ...
Have to do my first oilchange tommorrow and dont know what oil the dealer ran in it or the last owner but I wanted to know if its a good idea to run syntec and what oil and filter combo I should use? Also is it ok to switch to 100% syntec?
Thanks

Im only going to run 15w40 shell rotella in mine, why? Because a diesel is a expensive engine to repair, so id rather not chance running synthetic in it, even if there is only a slight chance of a problem, for what you gain, i don't think its worth it.

Most I know now with Ford/GM/Dodge diesels all run Rotella
Believe Rotella was what I ran in my CTD when I had it as well but can't remember.

iwas going to run castrol synthetic, its an 04 gmc with 80000Kms. Maybe I will use rotella. How often should I be doing the fuel filter as well?
what problem would synthetic cause?? rotella is good and all but its 100% safe and better IMO to run full synthetic. i run Mobil 1 in mine and have been since i got it at 85K. i run full synthetic in all of my cars and have been for years, never have had any problems because of it, nor has anyone ive ever known that runs it.
and dirty, change the fuel filter everytime you change the oil, which should be every 10K. also change the spin on filter on the bottom of the allison along with the oil and filter.

Run Shell Rotella or Delo 400 for summer time, they are the best diesel oils out there IMO. I see you are in Ontario so come winter time I HIGHLY recommend switching over to a 0w40/0w30 synthetic like Rotella offers.

sounds good. I run full synthetic in my jettas, both are gas and have over 400K on each of them thats why I wanted it in my d-max. Do most shops sell the small allison spinn on filter?
should I switch to a half synthetic first then a full?
I have run Amsoil since I have owned my truck and do the 10k oil changes on it with no problems. I also use their oil filter which is pretty good if you read the info on it. My engine has only seen dealer oil for the first 3k of its life, and has never had a problem. I will hit 110k tomorrow with it.

i wouldnt bother, when i got mine i switched it to full synthetic and all i noticed is that the engine seemed to run just a touch smoother and quieter. and most auto parts stores seem to carry the allison filters. i get mine at advanced auto or autozone.
synthetics totally fine for the dmax. ive never heard of anything like that. its impossible, the viscosity is the same as regular oil so i cant see how anything like that could happen.

Another good idea is having your oil testedI think you can buy the kit for like $30 or so
I know some that do it every 10k at oil changes some do it every other and some every 50k but you send it into the lab and they analyze it for ya and send you the report.
If you plan to tow a lot or push huge hp out of it, then it might be a good idea![]()

on the oil sampling. Its helpful that's for sure, if I hadn't had mine tested on my 03 CTD I wouldn't have known there was more diesel than usual in the oil haha. One injector versus a whole motor is good in my book. I use delo 400 regardless of temp, just warm er up like you should any oil burner. I wouldn't wait 10k between oil filter changes though. Id probably change it at least every 5k, I do every 3k but I'm pretty cautious on stuff like that. Oil doesn't break down just gets dirty, better safe than sorry anyways just my .02. Oh and to the guy who posted he will switch when it gets below 35'C Im confused thats 95'F lol? Switchin to a zero weight at that temp? Must be a typo?

X2 on running dino in the summer and syn in the winter. Its fine to do your change intervals at 10K but you can go down to 7K if your want to be really safe. Anything less is a wast of oil unless you have a high power truck and the heavy fueling is diluting your oil.

i do know that you can get all the filters you need if you goto a heavy-duty truck supply store..
my uncle is a manager at the panama city branch of the covington heavy-duty parts chains.
and for what its worth i buy my 350's filters there!!
thanks

Ah yeah -35 is gettin chilly haha. I use a block heater and have a heated dipstick I can use if its that cold. Still run nothin but delo 400. Course thats in an 03 cummins not sure how the dmax would like it? As for changing at ten yeah thats fine if your just driving it but its still an issue of the filter not the oil. Filter isnt that spendy for cheap insurance the way i look at it.
