Hi guys. New to the diesel forum. I bought a 2003 Kodiak 4500 truck with a D-Max. I bought it dirt cheap at the auction. Well it said unknown starting issue. I believe to be a fuel pump as it spins over but don't crank. I hope its not the injector pump. How can I diagnose which fuel pump. As I don't want to replace both. I put a relay in it and it didn't cure it. I understand it has an electric pump in the tank and an injector pump. Any ideas.

no one has an idea on how to diagnose which pump. Is the injector pump supposed to come on with the key also? Does it come on only when the motor spins over? I am a gas powered truck fan but the diesel was cheap and its more heavier duty then what I am driving currently. Any ideas welcome.

well just loosen the filter and see if it pumps fuel out...then are your glow plugs good? put a ohm meter on and check them

got the fuel filter in the engine compartment off and no fuel so I am guessing its plugged. I would rather it be a filter then replacing the injector pump. But my local store didn't have them in stock so I am waiting till the morning when they come in.

If you took the filter off and no fuel came out....How can the filter be clogged causing a restriction?

    Am i missing something.

Sounds as if no fuel is getting UP to the filter....The injection pump WILL NOT suck it's own fuel from the tank if the Lift pump is not working (The fuel pump not operating creates a blockage in the system.)

I figured if the filter was taken off at one end and no fuel came through the filter it most likely is clogged. I will take it completely off as I already ordered new filters. I can't hear the fuel pump come on with the key like the one in my gas truck. I'm not familiar with the diesel is the pump in the fuel tank not audible on a diesel. Any help appreciated.

Ok What i'm reading is with a Duramax Pickup the Pump that sucks the pump from the tank is built into the injection pump or something like that...I'm not sure if the big trucks are different though. I haven't read ANYTHING about the fuel pump being in the tank like a gas vehicle.

I'd try out some duramax forums....

Not looking too good i hope you find better news

Did you try priming the filter? There is supposed to be a primer bulb or some way to pump it up

Re: 2003 Duramx C4500 starting issue

Well when I put the filters in tomorrow I will try priming it and see if it will crank. I spun the motor for quite a bit thinking it might be a priming issue or someone ran it out of fuel. If it doesn't have a fuel pump in the tank rock auto's listing would have to be wrong. Which would not surprise me as they are the only one that listed an in tank pump. They list and inline pump for the auxillary tank which this truck also has. So there may not be a pump in the tank. It has a fuel pump relay which I replaced but I don't know what the relay would trigger. That is the part that don't make sense. Is the fuel pump relay simply turning on the injector pump. As the injector pump is driven by a pulley.

Ok well there is an exception on Trucks with dual tanks. They have a pump on the frame to divert fuel from one tank to another.....Or something like that.

Is that pump working? IF not it could be causing a blockage..Which is what the relay is for.

I didn't know it had dual tanks. I did some reading the other night and i read that was an exception...Duramax Pickup trucks (2500-3500) Do not have a pump in tank or on frame. It's built onto the back of the injection pump./

and the injection pump is not belt Driven it's in the engine valley and is GEAR driven...

Re: 2003 Duramx C4500 starting issue

Read this thread man. Apparently I'm wrong...The INjection pump (CP3) DOES pull it's own fuel from the tank which is hard on it....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=309372

However I can't find the thread now but i did read the CAb Chassis or Kodiak/topkick trucks have a pump on the frame.

Re: 2003 Duramx C4500 starting issue

I think the issue is solved. The dang switch that operates the tank swtiching from one to the other is screwed up. I have it on primary tank which is what tank the fuel is in. Well After checking with my meter the switch is flipped to primary but still drawing from the aux. tank. Hence I put fuel in the aux. tank and the damn thing cranked right up. Any ideas on fixing that switch or is something else where that is the issue. The aux tank prob holds 20-30 gallons.
