HID Conversion?

Has anyone done a HID conversion on a NBS Tahoe? I have been looking on eBay and see a lot of the HID conversion kits for sale. Also, does anyone have the xenon headlights? Do they really look anywhere near as good as HID's?

what kind of HID conversion are you wanting? theres a few different routes you can go with this

you can go with a plug and play kit that will plug right into your stock 9006? plugs, it will come with rebased d2s or d2r bulbs (youll want d2r if your using a reflector based set up which it would be with your stock lights.....but with a setup as this, you will have hot spots where the light will be brighter in some spots and not as bright in others as it is a halogen headlight, you would have this same problem if you use those ebay halogen projectors


what i did and the best way to go about it, is to retrofit actual HID xenon projectors into your housings, you will be blown away with the difference in output and you will have a nice cutoff/beam pattern coming from the projectors, heres a few pictures of my setup and how the light is actually focused



the beam cutoff in this picture is a little off from my bulbs being out of position, but you get the basic idea of where i heading with this

well like the other guy i have HID's too but it is on a OBS like his. but unlike his i didn't waste my time trying to retro fit projectors that ur really not going to need. i just have the regular euro headlights with 10,000K bulbs. mine was a plug and play set up and i couldn't be any happier. i don't know about him but i don't have any "hot spots" in my lights. there is so much light that goes everywhere it don't even matter. i c a hell of a the road in front of me and don't have any problems. my suggestion to u is buy a plug and play kit from e-bay should run u around 300 put it in and walk away. the guy i bought mine from is "xenonpros" on e-bay great product free shipping be there in 2 or 3 days.

do you understand that the higher k rating you go, the MORE LIGHT YOU LOSE right? and you do have hotspots, you just dont have anything that actually puts light on the ground to compare

if your serious about your lighting you will NOT buy any kit over 6000k, even that is pushing it if you want your lights to be actually bright and not just blue

go do some reading over at www.hidplanet.com and you will see how right i am about this, your 10,000k kit puts barely any light on the ground compared to ANY xenon projector, or even an actual hid reflector based set up

if you want superior lighting you WILL retrofit projectors, as NO relfector set up will EVER compare to a projector, and choose a 4100k d2s bulb to go with it, not 10,000k....please dont talk about something you dont have much knowledge on, as from your post that seems to be the case

Nice work pridefcf. I'm glad to see someone else using HIDs correctly. I used the hella 90mm H9 projectors and retrofitted DS2 bulbs to them. I'm using 4300K osram bulbs and hella ballasts. Here is a pic of the cut-off.

From what I understand...nothing, your stock bulbs should plug right in.

IMO waste of money, you will NEVER get anywhere close to the output with any halogen bulb of Xenons

i remember i talked to you about your retro a long time ago, asking which headlights you used, i retroed from a set of reflectors instead of the halogen projector headlights, im using Valeo ECE H7s out of an audi A4/S4, but im switching and going with a quad system, 4 TSX projectors

IF you use the headlights your gf bought for you, your output nor cutoff will look right, due to the fact its a halogen projector, mind you SOME halogne projectors work in xenon situations

for example, both him and I are using halogne based projectors in our housings, you can tell by the H7 for mine and the H9 for his, but these are the few halogen projectores that will work, and im almost 100% that the onees that come in the headlights you have, will make the beam patter look like poo and you will have hotspots like a reflector based set up

but your more than willing to try it out and see how you like it, after you buy a kit, you can always sell it and go the retrofit route, but if your serious about lighting, you wont waste your time with a kit, as they are compeltely obsolete compared to any HID retro

Yea, I'm going to redo my headlights in a couple of weeks. I just need to adjust the bulb position a little and I should be fine.

Unfortunately most people dont realize this. I got the Sylvania Xenarcs a few years ago and I'm very happy with them.

yep, those would be bosch e46 HID projectors, i almost used them for my lights, but went with the valeos instead

you cant get better than HIDs when it comes to automotive lighting, its all in the selection of projectors you use

no no, they will work just fine, they just will not be able to perform anywhere near as good as an actual set of xenon projectors, your output will not be very good and you wont have a sharp cutoff like shown in the pictures above, but of course they will perform better than halogens

if you do buy a kit, just make sure you buy the right rebased bulb type to fit your housings


retrofitting is the way to go IMO, but if you want to try the kit before hand, thats up to you....the retro will be slightly more money, and you will have to do some work on the lights to make the projectors fit, but its well worth it in the end, youll have a even spread of light, and a razor sharp cutoff

your taking a set of xenon hid projectors, and fitting them into your current housings, pretty much you have to cut the rear of the housing of, and figure out a way to mount the projector inside of it, and then seal it up from the rear

its not hard, but with our housing being so small, its going to take a little bit of time to get it right, it would be best to practice on a old set of lights if you have them

then the bulbs and ballasts just hook right up to the harness that you connect to your stock harness
