I want to remove the black rubber trim on my 91 since it's faded and looks like crap. I am going to be painting the truck black soon and they look so much smoother without the trim.

I have been trying to find a thread on this site about removing it but had no luck. I tried a razor but that didn't work well. Maybe fishing line?

What have you guys done to remove yours?

High test fishing line works, it's either that or use alot of finger strength and pull it off slowly to keep the paint from coming up too. If you have access to a heat gun(or a really powerful hair dryer), use it to heat up the trim first to soften the glue.

It can be a very big pain in the a$$, but it does look 1000X better afterwards.

We all can't get lucky and have the previous owner remove it all before you get the truck like I did lol

if its vinyl, sticker or glue it will come off with ease.

heat gun to warm up the molding and melt the foam adhesive, 3M eraser wheel to clean up the remaining foam - plan on spending a few hours by your trucks side - but man will she look cleaner when your done!!

De badged my 94 K1500 a few years ago - been happy ever since.

fishing line.....eraser wheel is great if you're re-spraying.....but if you're just removing it I'd stick with fishing line and a heat gun

I'v always found that fishing line is best for removing trim or emblems, just be sure to get strong fishing line so you are not always breaking it

But keep in mind not to get like 20lb test or higher cuz its gonna start to be too difficult to get that diameter line in between the paint and the molding

Well, having done this on a 96 Suburban from Vegas...here's what I recommend.

    A heat gun
Soft plastic spatula from Dollar Tree
    3M bug and tar remover
    Old wash cloths
    Paper towels

Just carefully heat up about two feet at a time and pull. Don't burn the adhesive onto the truck as it not necessary and makes it harder to get off. Pull very slowly on the trim. When your done getting the moulding off go back with the spatula and gently scrape off the residue using the heat gun on low. What doesn't come off with that you use the bug and tar remover and the wash cloth. Cleans up nicely and takes about two hours for a full size Suburban.

To get mine off I just used a heat gun. A couple quick passes were enough to break them loose. The worst part is getting the lest over adhesive off. Id suggest 3M Adhesive remover and some elbow grease haha.

Any way you do it, its a pain in the a**. If you can't wait for when you paint it, do it on a nice warm day and the truck is sitting in the sun, helps get the adhesive soft and more plyable. If you can wait for paint, just peel the molding off right before you drop it off and let the body shop sand it smooth.

i think i'll do this at the end of the month when i go back home to visit my parents. I'll order the 3m adhesive remover wheel and me and my old man can have a saturday afternoon project. he helped me when I changed out my grille and headlights and by help I mean he drank beer and handed me tools lol.
