I'm looking to install an aftermarket tach in my 91 1500... Id like to keep the original gauge assembly and was wondering if it would be possible for me to put a tach where the original radio use to be, and if so where would I wire it to b/c there is no provision in the distributor cap for the hookup like older vehicles.

    Thanks

As far as using the original placemant in the dash for the tach, all I can say is take it apart and see if you can make somthing work. Somthing custom would be really cool. Or perhaps somthing like the pic below. I did this with one of my old 5" auto meter tachs. I think it looks pretty good. And by the way. there is about 1/4" clearance between the tach and the window when the door is shut.

The hookup for the tach is on the ignition coil on the motor. There is a white wire that is not hooked up to anything coming off of the coil. It is about 4" long coming off of the coil and has a female spade terminal on it. If the truck didn't originaly have a tach, this wire may be taped up in black tape.

yes u can put a tach in the original radio hole, the opening is 3 1/2 inches top to bottom so a 3 3/8 tach will work, i just ordered a radio delete pocket and plan on fiberglassing the front of it for a 3 3/8 tach, right now i have a 2 5/8 tach just zipped tied into the empty space, and ya theres a white wire coming off the coil, was piggyback on mine tho the wire went somewhere but also had a female spade connector on it

You can get it at pretty much any ausio store like circuit city or best buy or abc whorehouse.
