Got a 06 2500 and it has developed a very annoying rattle somewhere down in the steering column. I have 2 other company trucks that have the same noise...just not as bad...yet.
Sounds kind of like 2 rubber mallets down in the column somewhere constantly hitting together as the front suspension works. I have looked and cant find anything loose.
I realize this may be a vague question but hope that someone may have found what it is

sounds like the bearing in the steering column, mine was doing the same thing. you can either replace the bearing or go the route i did and put a 2" muffler clamp around the bearing (mine is quiet as can be now).
If you search this problem on here there are several threads on this.
Intermediate steering shaft and intermediates steering shaft to column bearing.
I had the same problem with my two trucks and found many guys are using Dorman's aftermarket intermediate shaft replacement. Bought a replacement for my first truck and was really impressed and updated my second truck. You should be able to fine it at a local auto store or at Amazon for about $55 delivered to you door.
Good luck
Best to replace both while your in there. As for why you still have the noise, it could be the bearing or the shaft you used may already be failing I'm not sure what brand you used. Gm made a shaft that was suppose to fix it but from my understanding it still gave people problems. The dorman shaft it the best route to go to fix the problem.

No problem glad to help. I've still gotta do both the bearing and shaft in mine just haven't made the time and just kinda living with it for now.

My noise came from the bearing housing loose in the column. The white thing in the picture was loose in the housing. A hose clamp over the joint and against the flange, tighten it up and no more rattle. I had also changed the shaft some time ago and thought maybe it was the problem, it was still in great condition.

We've got the same problem with two Chevy's at work. Haven't repaired either one, you just kinda get used to the rattle. Plus, you can't feel it on decent roads in either truck.
