How To Get Unstuck from Mud, and a scary story

I was stuck in a little mud this weekend. Bad timing as I received a call that my wife was being rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery. She was near death, but is ok now.

I am replacing the stock tires this week with Bridgestone Revos

I ordered a 48" high-lift jack with all the accessories today.

I was stuck in a very small amount of mud, but the soil was soft because I think it was a farm field.

I tried to jack up the truck and put some 8 foot long 2" x 6" under the tire to drive out.

The boards provided NO traction, so I couldn't drive out.

My friend got stuck trying to pull me out with a tow strap.

No trees around, and no winch anyway.

I won't be buying a winch as I never offroad, but I want to be better prepared if I ever get stuck again.

    Questions:

    1. What else can I put under the tire for this situation that would allow for good traction? One source suggested jacking the truck up and putting pieces of carpet under the tires.

    2. Would a come along help? I have a 2 ton one that wasn't with me at the time.

    3. What else can I do in this situation?

    4. Are there any videos or online sources to tell how to get unstuck?

    5. Do you know of any 4x4 or offroading forums that I can go to and do a search?

    Thanks.
    Jeff

well, i know people who have gotton stuck with street tires, not really stuck, but tires just get clogged and spin on top of the mud....well, about 3 guys later pushing on the tailgate, batta boom batta bing....OUT!!!!! if you have balled street tires, that may help some, but maybe not depending on the terrain. im sure others will chime in.

I always mud with street tires and every time I get stuck there is no way in hell I can get out nor can any truck pull me out so out comes a tractor to the rescue. I guess I am no help but I can relate to your problem.

wow i am glad to hear your wife is alright and all the best to her!

As far as your situation goes...i have never been stuck (knock on wood), but then again i nevr do anything too extreme just some stuff up to about the bottom of the rim. Anyways to answer your questions my buddies have come up with some crazy but good ideas...

    The ultimate rescue boards
    Supplies
    2 2x6x8foot boards
    2 1x1x6-8foot boards
    Some Screws
    A Screw Driver

    Instructions
Take the 1x1 board and cut it into 6" lengths. Then screw each length across the 2x6 every 8-10" untill you have a "Ladder" type set up. Then take a 4" length of the 1x1 and screw it vertically into the ends of each 2x6...these you "drive" into the mud to try to keep the board steady.

Those boards are awesome and i have seen them in action. The only trick is you have got to get your tires on it. Now that may be with a jack or something, but that is up to you. Here is a quick diagram

What do you guys think of my buddies idea?

those boards look like a cool idea...the 4" pieces on the bottom could be slid into the stake pocket holes if you dont hav bedrails and hav something in the bed

Don't drive in farm fields? lol.

Every farmer knows that. A good set of tires and a longer tow strap should do the trick.

i never thought about the stake hole storage option...i like it. Also i forgot to mention that you may want to cut the edges of the stakes so they are easier to sink into the ground...

Re: How To Get Unstuck from Mud, and a scary story

Board setups like that work really well in mud or soft sand for helping to distribute weight or just give the tires some bite in the slop. I drive a concrete truck that weights upwards of 74,000 lbs loaded (granted it has 6 wheel drive and 445/65R22.5 tires), and whenever the situation gets bad or we want to avoid having to call a dozer, they just lay out some mats like what you mentioned. The mats we use for the concrete trucks are basically 3 - 2"x8"x8' spaced 4" or so apart with 2"x6"x30" boards nailed crosswise across the 8' boards at a right angle to the long boards. Sometimes if you can shovel a little mud away from the tires and wedge mats in under them, when ya throw it in gear the truck will pull itself up onto the mat.

In my suburban I used to carry this metal mesh like this:

It was very heavy duty (weighed a lot but didn't bend with the weight of the truck) and worked very well to get me un-stuck.

Only problem with the traction boards like opsbear7 shows is that if you spin your tires trying to get up on them, you can rip the cleats loose. Then, as the cleat pulls out, it rolls up with the screws sticking out of it and punches some nice holes in your tires. Don't ask how I know this.....

I dont think the boards are a great idea. Heres why, With bald street tires you have to put the board so close together to be able to climb up them. If not you will stay stuck between them. Looks like a heck of alot of work . If the mud is that soft, your gonna play hell jacking the truck up high enough to get this huge contraption under it. I recomment good traction tires. Limited slip differentials, and learning the vcapabilities of your truck first and foremost. Second they make a device that claws into the ground to pull out without having a tree around. A good come along or winch and this small fold up claw will do the trick. Not too sure I have enough spare room to haul half a house in lumber around in the back of my truck to build this big wooden ladder everytime I get stuck.

Re: How To Get Unstuck from Mud, and a scary story

midnite...i agree with the tires, limited slip ect... that is definatly the way to go...but that is serious $$$...

The boards i put up cost like $25 or less so it is just a quick easy idea.

I do see the problem of the screws going into the tires if one of the cross peices comes off.

I am curious to know more about the comalong with a "mud clamp" any links?

Re: How To Get Unstuck from Mud, and a scary story

I got stuck once with my factory tires in a farmers field when picking up my goose decoys. One tractor later, I was out. I went out and put BFG MT's on, and never had to worry about it again. I also got like 55k out of them, so they were a good road tire too. Mainly, you also have to remember that momentum is your friend, and make sure you keep going until you know you are on dry ground.

I'm glad your wife is ok now.

Re: How To Get Unstuck from Mud, and a scary story

I think your best bet is to try some home-made 'boards' like that have been mentioned, a traction device (limited slip), and really a Winch. I know you don't offroad ever, but they are really usefull for other situations. Once you get one you'll start using it more than you think :imo:
