i'd say about what you got in mind, with some 49s. and a blown 454. or 502.

Late 70s, with 572 big block, 55" Tractor tires Lift to clear, and four wheel steering, aux washer tank to keep the mud off, diff lockers. Gotta have the power to spin the mud off and get everyone dirty.
Actually saw a Ford ranger with a 460 and the setup described above. He pulled everyone else out when they got stuck.

I would go LWB over SWB, it tracks straighter in the mud. NO replacement for displacement either...502 or more .
Spool the rear, detroit the front, move the rad to behind the cab in bed, move the air filter to inside the cab, throw in a rollcage, 5 point seats, throw away as much sheetmetal as possible, and get dirty.

my dream mudder is real similar to yours...

    78 Chevrolet Scottsdale ***Step-Side***
    built 383 or 427
    D80 F/R - 5.13s & welded spider gears
    Coil-over 4-Link
    44" cut Boggers

i've seen several similar trucks in the past, here's a video with one of them in it... it's the blue chevy in the beginning, the dodge on 2.5 tons is one of my favorite trucks ever, i always seem to miss taking video of him because i usually show up to the mudhole at night, but rumor has it he's got 800hp in it

    here's another one at night

1981-1991 Full Size Blazer with a 91 front end. 1 tons, TH400, 38.5 Swampers, geared to match. Not sure on motor, maybe a 419 small block, for weight reasons.

    Re: The perfect mud truck

Who would waste one of the first sets of 54 boggers on that thing??? I cant beleive interco even let them get one of the first sets I've seen alot better trucks with plans for the 54s. The tires are bad ass though.
