A guy we know has a 1982 chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 he wants to get rid of for 850. Apparently it has a cracked transfer case and I was wondering what transfer case it would have? Its a standard with manual 4wd obviously. Will it have a NP205 or what? Where can I pick one up for a fair price? Im going to get the truck, just want to have an idea as to what tranfer case I need to be looking for.

    thanks

if the t-case is cracked its most likely an np208, aluminum t-case. lighter duty 3/4 tons had them as well as the 1/2 tons. i've never heard or seen an np205 case crack, its known to be the strongest t-case available.

well the truck is a heavy duty. I know the light 3/4 are 6 lug. this truck is 8 lug.

then np205, cheap and easy to find just make sure it has the input shaft to mate up to an sm465 (its interchangeable). i doubt the t-case cracked, most likely something else.

AFAIK, all OOBS 3/4 tons were 8 lug. No LD and HD designations. Even my uncle's 74 C20 (2WD) had 8 lug axles from the factory.

But as for the transfer case, crawl under the truck and see what it is. I know the NP208 in the OOBS I had had a tag on it with NP208 written on it.

well i will look at it better, but he is telling me what the mechanic told him. The truck has lived on their deer lease for yrs so it has been beat up.

Gotcha. Didn't realise it was so far away.
If I had to guess, I'd say it had an NP205, being a 3/4 ton. But I don't really know for sure.

its cool man i appreciate the input. i knew looking for myself would be the best bet, but figured someone might have had an experience with a similar truck and could tell me right off hand. thanks again

Only 1 tons in the 80s got the 205. Inless it was swapped out, it's a 208, which is aluminum. I don't think it is even possible to crack a 205.

I would bet it is a NP208. I have owned an 81, 82, and currently an 84 3/4ton 4wds all with 4 speeds, and all had 208 cases. As b454rat states, only one I know of in the 80s that got the 205 were 1tons.

there were some LD 3/4 tons, only way to tell was the 6 lug axles. 10 bolt front 14 bolt sf rear, not common.

    Re: 1982 chevy 3/4 4x4

The lite duty 6 and 8 lugs only applies to the 88-up style trucks. Prior to that a 1/2t got 6, 3/4 got 8, period. They did make sorta lite and heavy 3/4 tons, lite would get the 14sf, and the heavy would get 14ff. I haven't seen too many 80s 3/4 tons with the 14ff. ALL 1980 and earlier 3/4s got the 14ff, 14sf didn't come out till '81....
