    Question np 205 speed sensor

hey im hopin somebody out there can help me on this one. i swapped a sm 465/205 combo into my 93 sierra swb stepside. I built a custom mount to run the 205 for the ifs front end and everything is workin fine except for the speed sensor. I drilled and tapped into the housing to accept my stock speed sensor i didnt have to jimmy the wiring, what im finding now is that the speed sensor isnt long enough to pick up a signal from the reluctor ring in the tcase. does anyone know if there is a different speed sensor i can get or if anyone else has done this swap what kind of setup did you run. any help would be appreciated

Did you put a tone ring on the output shaft? You wont get a reading without a 40tooth (IIRC) tone ring.

no i have a slip yoke 205, so i took the tone ring off my 241 and just machined it to the same thickness and the old gear drive setup and it fit right on

It sounds like the sensor isnt in the housing far enough. Which is what you said when you said it isnt long enough. You might need to machine the portion of the tailshaft housing down enough so that the sensor dosent bottom out on the housing, but has enough depth to get to the tone ring.

    Re: np 205 speed sensor

that was an idea that i had, the only problem that i have with doing that is that the portion of the housing that the new hole is in isnt very thick, i dont know how much i could take off of it, i had it all apart before i may have to rexplore that option.

Did you drill and tap the side opposide of the origional (mechanical) speed sensor? IE. Across the output shaft?

    Re: np 205 speed sensor

Hit the side of the housing with a grinder till the sensor is right. Either put some feelers in there to get the right depth or just eye ball it. You could also grind on it till you get a speed reading...
