I hav an 86 K20 that im building up to be mostly a play in the mud truck with a little main street cruising. It has a g80 in the rear axle and I'd like to swap it out for a detroit at some point, so my question is will the detroit just bolt in or is there more to it? thanks

    You K20 could have a 14SF of 14FF.

If it is a 14SF G80, the detroit is a complete carrier replacement, so you have to pull the ring of the old diff set up the gears again.

If it is a 14FF G80, I'm not sure if the G80 unit can be pulled out of the OE carrier. If it can, the detroit is a drop in. If not, you need to source an open carrier to drop teh detroit into, and swap carriers like above.

(edit...same as above...sorry)For the 14 bolt full floater you need an open carrier for the detroit to work. The g80 carrier is a breed of its own. The detroit for the full floater is just a spider gear etc replacement, not a whole carrier like the sf. Look at the axle and see if the center of the hub has 8 bolts in the center...( besides the 8 lug nuts.)

(Look the 14 bolt full floater and the semi floater in google so ull know what were talking about.)

Yes they make aftermarket carriers, although depends on the gears you are running. I think that 14 bolts are 4:10 and down and 4:56 and up....meaning theres 2 carriers. Check your gears before you buy to see what you have.

Heres a few that makes em new...superior, yukon, g2, etc.....search ebay for one, used ones come up pretty cheap, search the net ..ull find one cheaper than new. You will need bea a set up kit with bearings and the axle set up if you go this route. It could be a lil costly set up new, the lockers are around 500 plus, the set up kits are over a 100.00 with bearings.

Its not the best way but if your looking for a cheap locker weld it up or have it welded.....cheap fix.. like i said not the best way but it works..

I have 4:10 gears and heres the thing, I'm 17 and trying to learn as much as I can while i can. My uncle is my mentor, pretty much and hes into hot rods and such, used to race sprint cars, motorcycles, and other things im sure. He can do just about anything when it comes to engines or anthing car/truck related. Hes the one that passes or fails my ideas and where i'd be ok with welding the spider gears, im thinkin he wouldnt go along with it.
And I've read too much about the gov locks breakin, so I think I wanna put a detroit in it, could i maybe get a list of the things needed to swap one in? thanks for all y'alls help

G80's don't break in 14FF axles, wear out maybe, but they wont break.

G80's bad reputation comes from the 10 bolt application of it, the carrier is just too small for the guts, leaving it prone to explode on the shock loads it creates through its normal operation.

I can agree but can also disagree with that from a personal occurance. My g80 in my 03 10.5 full floater Turned 35s and 37s for a few years then it started to just spin one tire, never made any noises at all for a long time. But a few months ago when the gears were installed there was all kinds of pieces in the cover. The clutches were scattered and the pawl was all chewed up, a mess isnt even the word..lol. I will say the trucks never seen mud and has only been on mild trails a few times, also im not the smoke the tires type..lol. (mine either just completely wore out or went bad from the larger tires..like said) I guess depending on the tire size and how hard you are on it will say to leave it or not. If it were me, and i was keeping the g80 id stay 35s or smaller. It your going bigger id take it out before it ruins the gears too when it goes. That goes to each their own i guess.. Many have had g80s for years in the 14 bolt, many had em explode.

I was thinking about it ..... an install kit with bearings, open carrier, detroit, your gears, around a gallon of gear oil, gear marking pen , either permatex or a gasket for the cover and thats prob about it, chime in if im forgetting something please. ...or leave it alone and its free...

You either got a bad unit or I got a good one because I've run 38s on 4:10 gears, regeared and rebuilt at 130k with 5.38s to run 41s and 40" Boggers. I've burried it past the door sills, roasted the tires on many occassions and genreally beat the hell out it. The only thing I don't like about it is that once your wheel speed hits 20mph or so it unlocks. I've laid into it coming around corners and had one tire all the sudden break loose and spin like crazy many times. However, since it's built to perform in the mud and not the quarter mile, that is a minor complaint.
