Hey wats up i have a 2001 dodge ram 2wd, and i was wondering if this truck will hold up in the mud easily. Also i wanted to ask johnthedrunk if those trucks in his pictures are 2wd and how they held up in the mud. Also i was thinking about getting a locker on the back axle of my truck to help with traction if that helps. i have a 5.2 liter v8 magnum so it is a good size engine.

my experiance is that a 82 buick riviera with a 307 will run through mud 9" deep as long as you keep the filter dry and your folks don't find out what you did with the family car... that said your dodge should be fine but check your area out, mud hides stuff that only your truck will feel. if you don't feel safe try some kiddie pools and work up , all experiance is good, regardless of the outcome!

yeah, mines a 2wd. a 4.3 V6 also. you should be just as good as me. just get a locker and some mud tires on that back axle and youll be good to go

hey guys, new user. I think 2WD forum would be awesome. I go muddin' in my 2WD SIERRA whenever I can. No posi rear end or lift kit, nothing. So it takes some skill not to get stuck but it's fun. Maybe I'm just nuts.

Aren't you 2WD guys the least bit concerned about getting stuck? I've seen plenty of good deals on 2WD trucks and the only thing that drove me away was the fact that it wasnt a 4X4. I'm just kinda curious how differently you have to drive offroad if you are in a 2wheeler. I have a friend who flipped his truck because he lost traction in mud. Thing was the truck was a 4X4, but he didnt engage the 4 wheel drive because he thought it was funny to slide back and forth through the mud like a dumbass. I wonder if the 4 wheel drive could have saved his truck, it was totalled, needless to say.

this is reguarding the guy who wanted a chart like the 4x4 guys have....

before i lifted my truck i searched around for information and came up with this rule of thumb....2wds are generally 2 inches lower than chevy 4x4s...atleast for 1500s this formula worked out perfectly for me....but if you dont know just lift it more

Me either. I get stuck on flat ground if the grass is a little wet.

sure seems like there a lots of people with no common sense if they dont understand that you can drive offroad in a 2WD truck i know lots of guys in east texas that go through mud deep enough to make most people with a 4WD not even think about doing it ,ive actually seen some 2wd make it through stuff that a 4wd got stuck in 2wd is lighter in the front end and in some situations is better but there is no limits to having fun off road no matter what you drive unless its not a chevy

The secret to not gettin stuck in a 2wd is stay on the gas no matter what (unless there is a tree in front). Try not to find the deepest, longest ruts in the area. Just remeber to stay on it and when you steer, if it dosent react, give it a little more. dont back off.

Ill agree with that in most situations, but as soon as you feel the back end sink then let off cause you will be in a deep hole.

I just joined and have been poking around the forum. This topic got my attention because I really enjoy my 2WD '77 1/2 ton. And it goes just about anywhere I want it to. I found this place because its about to undergo restoration, and it will still be 2WD when I'm done. When I absolutely have to get there in deep snow or steep terrain I take my Suburban, but a 2WD Chevy pickup is all around the best get-around vehicle I've ever driven. Those of you who pointed out technique is the key were right on!

ya its all about how you drive your 2wd, being smart and using your momentum while not flooring it through every thing and knowing your trucks
limits. i think its just as fun as a 4wd but with more of a challenge.

its very possable.... just wait till you get stuck though.... either that or stay on fields...

For those "4-wheelin' boys" that arn't too familiar with 2wd off-roading . . . check it out:













All of these trucks are 2wd, and can top out at 90+ mph through the toughest desert terrain with out breaking a damn thing.

Though a few have done it, the suspension set up for "off-road racing" does not tolerate 4wd, unless you put lot's of $$$ and a couple years down for custom fabrication. My point being: 2wd's rule the world of Off-Road Racing and Pre-Running.

I have a 2wd 2006 2500HD with a 4.10 locker, I go offroad... Levees, dirt trails but I am not gonna go in some pool of muddy water, I wouldn't do that in a 4x4 HD either...

Now, maybe in my beater yota, but not while I am still paying notes.....

I'm just trying to find out what you do when you go offroad with 2WD. No postwhoring. Usually when you get on rocks offroad in 2WD, you go nowhere, so I was wondering what people do. And 2wd doesn't do deep sand either.

I guess you've never been to Baja or Barstow or Parker or any other offroad race where deep silt sticks EVERYTHING...I used to cruise ALL DAY in the Sonora desert in my Suburban, just lower you air pressure and LEARN HOW TO DRIVE.
Any knuckleheaded redneck backwards a$$ country f$(% can put it in low range and drive through sand and get stuck. Strange how I've had to haul a$$ out to Barstow to yank then tow a broken IRS Chevy or GMC with my lowly 2 wheel drive (with a Detroited 14 Bolt) Burb.
Have I been stuck? Plenty, but then I had to learn how to drive it before I learned how to get the other guy out too.
In closing, this is an ABC forum for 2wd folks, there's A, me and B, other 2wd drivers so C your way out if you can't be constructive.
BTW, when your front end crumbles under it's own weight and fragile parts, how will you get home? No sweat, if you're out here in the Mojave desert, you can call me.... I'm just a cellphone, CB or Ham Radio call away.

It's called a winch (remember, 1.5 times your vehicles body weight is a good rule of thumb for winch rating, I have a 9,000 lb winch and a receiver hitch front and back) and a pull pal, or if you're cheap, an axle shaft and a sledge hammer work well too...
