I'm looking into doing an ls1 swap on my 3rd gen camaro. I'm trying to find a donor car but it seems like nobody says which motor the car has in their ad. Do the V6 firebirds and camaros have any external differences from the V8s? I assume only V8s came with dual exhaust, but I can't always see the exhaust in the pictures. This excludes the obvious WS6, Z28, Trans Am etc. Thanks.

98-02 Z28 had the LS1 and looked like the regular Camaro. 98-02 SS had the LS1 and had a scoop on the hood.

98-02 Trans Ams had LS1 and front bumper was molded with circle fog lights. Formulas had the same engine (could of came was the Ram Air hood), but looked like a regular Firebird. Firehawk same engine, but different hood.

Aside from the exhaust and the badges, no they didn't. The only ones you can tell the difference for sure are the Trans Am (body cladding, spoiler) and the Camaro SS (hood scoop, spoiler).

Actually, if you look for the Z28 badge on the front fenders, you can detect it pretty easily. The base model Camaros didn't have badges at all.

Rs camaros could also come with a V8, or did only z28's and SS's? The only thing that tells you the car is a z28 is the dual exhaust and badge on the fender, correct? This makes things difficult....

Only 4th gen Camaro RS is 96-97 and they all had V6s. Those 2 years RS was an appearance package.

^^^ This. For the 98-02, you could get the sport/appearance package (ground effects, spoiler lip) on either the V6 or V8, but yeah, the 96-97 RS was V6 only.

You might want to take a look over at www.thirdgen.org. They've got an entire sub forum dedicated to swapping ls & lt engines into 3rd gens.

That section must be newer. I've been searching over there a lot lately but I use google to search the site and rarely ever just browse, so I completely missed that section. Ill take a look, thanks.
