The "Theft" light keeps coming on and I have to wait 20 minutes for it to reset....not fun when I'm mowing 10+ yards a day. I had it picked up by a wrecker after the second time today and the shop said I may have to take it to the dealer. I am using original keys with the chip molded into it. Are their any tricks to fix this or will I have to go to the stealership?

Oh you guys are loads of help. Although typically I'd laugh and agree with ya, I'd like to get the damn thing back. Dunno what the rollback was though.

It needs to have a perameter re set done and can only be done at the dealer unles you know someone with a "New Generation Star Tester"..you will also need both sets of ignition keys.. But this doesnt sound typicall of a PATS (passive anti theft system) problem..usually it just wont grank (period)! so ..

By the way..you did know this was a Chevy forum....right?....lol

Oh lovely. Well I have both keys. Guess I'll have to pick it up and then bend over. BTW: it would crank but that's it. How much for the reset?

Is the theft light flashing rapidly on the cluster (little lock icon) if its NOT , could be something else all together, why did you think it was the security??
Im not sure, but I would think a minimum hrs labor..never had one done, never had a vehcle serviced by anyone other than me..

yes it was the theft light blinking. When I took the extra key to the shop this morning they said it fixed everything. They called a place in Indianapolis that told them what happened. Both keys have chips in them. The key I have been using went bad. Luckily I had a spare already. Dunno how the chip went bad...shop said they lose their memory. Dunno how true that is but that's what he said. I may get another key as back up.....$105 for new chipped/programmed key!!!! What happened to old $.50 keys?

Re: Ford Expedition Anti Theft keeps shutting the truck down

Well, after picking the Exp'n up Wed morning and paying the $140 bill, it quit 8 miles down the road b/c of the PATS (passive anti theft system). Had to wait 45 minutes for it to reset. Started and came home and parked it. I'm wanting for my tuner to see if he can disable it with HP Tuners software. God I hope so. I don't even like the thought of going to the dealership.

AThe chip is actually a transponder from I've been reading. Supposdly you can take the steerig column apart and place one key inside next to the module so it always senses the transponder. That way any key will work. I'll try this before paying several hundred for a new module,

If you know a tuner, why not just get the PATS disabled? Then you can go back to cheap keys. BTW, my local Ace hardware sells PATS keys for $80 if you have a working key that they can read to program the new one. I also found keys on eBay for $10-$12 for my Ranger. You can either buy them and take them somewhere to be cut and programmed or you can send the guy a working key without the PATS chip and he will cut it for you. You can program it yourself right on the truck. The instructions are all over the net. Just Google it.

Re: Ford Expedition Anti Theft keeps shutting the truck down

Picked up the truck from the dealer Wed. $85 diagnostic...not bad for dealer. Will take $1656 to fix it. Yeah right....with 242k on it. Needs a new PCM. Dealer wanted $830 for new PCM plus was gonna charge me over $200 to put on sway bar bushings .

I just spent and hour and a half taking the glove box out for nothing. Could get the PCM info by pulling tab off. Just got off the phone with 2 salvage yards and they are checking for one for me.

When I THOUGHT that I needed a new ECM for my Chevy pickup, I got one on eBay for $49.00 shipped for free. The new ECM worked fine. Unfortunately, that wasn't my problem. I threw it on a shelf for when I will eventually need it. All of the yards around Phoenix have begun to charge approximately 1/2 the going retail for most parts now. That's why I went the eBay route. Lots of luck with your Ford.

You would probably have better luck on a Ford forum where there more knowledgeable of Fords than a GM site.

Only b/c I couldn't get rid of it for nothing. My wife got it about 10+ years ago, gas went sky high and I couldn't give it away. So I put it to use pulling my mowers. It actually pulls better than my truck. It has no top end whatsoever but it has some grunt and the extra weight to handle the trailer and mowers. Rated for 10k lbs vs my truck around 6k I think.
