Will a 98+ 4L60E work in a older truck? (96-97)

[GMC K1500 SC]

I got a built 4L60E for sale and I have several people asking me what would need to be done to it for it to work in an older truck 96-97 year model. Also what would be needed to install say in a Camaro or Firebird? I know they make six different bolt on bell housings and tail shafts housings for it...

Came out of a 1999 2WD Tahoe 5.7L

Ken, it seems to me that if it came out of a 99 5.7 (traditional small block) then it would fit the 96-97's also. I am not positive on this as I am not a tranny guy, but if its true, then I am interested, and could pick it up next week from you as I'm under two hours away. My tranny isn't dead yet, but with 123,000 on it, and behind 400 hp I'm not sure how long it will last. If it wasn't for the aux. tranny cooler I'm sure it would be dead by now!

should bolt right up to another 2wd(96-99) truck.
4wd conversion would require different tailshaft housing and ouput shaft
camaro/similar cars probably would need bellhousing swap along with tailshaft housing and output shaft.either way it can be "reused" for several applications.

I'm not 100% sure the bellhousings are different tho.

True, but he does'nt mention what year F-body. It will bolt up to the LT1 correct?

I would imagine the harness could be different although I put in a 97 tranny in the wifes 98 and the stock harness worked with the new tranny.

you might want to double check but i think the valve bodies are different. I think. call your local tranny specialist. check this link trans ?

I just went through this entire setup on the current project the trans you have will work on any truck 96+. wiring is also the same. the f-body versions have different bellhousings (LS1) and different tailshafts. starters will also be different depending on bellhousing.

What about the LT1's?

It will bolt up to an LT1. I used my original 96 truck tranny for awhile on my lt1 before I opted to have one built up.

from what I understand, yes, and he confirms it - I have only played with swaps on the LS, but it makes sense since the LT motors are built off the same outer profile as the standard 350, while the LS motor is the newer profile.

The input shaft on this transmission is 30-spline. Gen-III and LSx engines use a version with a 33-spline input shaft. Torque converters between the two different designs are not interchangable. 4.3/5.0/5.7L Vortec and LT1 versions are all 30-spline.
