Has anybody here done a LT1 or LS1 swap? I was thinking about a 97LT! into my Tahoe using a painless kit.

I would go with a LS1, LS2 or 6.0L. LT1 is getting pretty old by now. If youa re gonna go to all that trouble might as well put the newer stuff in.

the cost is way less, and for the money you save you can make the LT1 run circles around LS1's

I dont know that an LS1 is really designed for a truck. Isnt the powerband much higher in the RPM range vs a 6.0 or something?

That's what I've always wondered, but I haven't really seen any LS1 swaps that are used as tow rigs. However, now that I think about it, wouldn't a higher stall torque convertor fix any possible lowend power problem?

Re: LT1 or LS1 into a 96-99 tahoe. Is it worth while?

Having driven both LT1 and LS1 F cars, I'd have to say that the LT1 feels more torquey down low, and the LS1 fixed the high-rpm fall-off that LT1's suffered from in stock form. Not sure you really care about high-rpm power, but that depends upon your goals. However, I put a few grand in my LT1 and I'm probably at the same power level as most bolt-on LS1's, so it comes down to what you want to deal with. the LS1 aftermarket is getting bigger, whereas the LT1 aftermarket has leveled off. Having worked on an LT1 a lot, I can say its not fun to work on, and quite tempermental and hard to troubleshoot. The ignition system is particularly fickle. Most people seem happy with the reliability of the LS1's. So, I guess the choice is yours: The LT1 may be cheaper now, but might not be as reliable. The LS1 has unlimited power potential. Hope this helps.

I would build a 383 out of your L31. Stick in a nice computer compatible roller performance cam. Edelbrock makes an aluminum vortec head called an E-tech that I have seen Car Craft make over 500 HP with on a 350. Then get ahold of some software to modify the PCMs settings. I believe TunerPro has a package available for the old school vortecs now.

To do an LS1 conversion on the OBS dont you have to modify the frame to utilize the A/C?

You can just buy some aftermarket brackets that use a Sanden and put it on top of the engine.

I talked with a guy from S&P about a 6.0L swap into my 99. He said the stock AC pump would clear. I would probably measure pretty closely before trying the swap.
