hey all. this is my first post. I have to say this site is awesome! so much info. I recently bought a 98 Z71 5.7 with 125,000 mi. Its been a long time since I tinkered with motors. (Been driving a lifted wrangler up until now, but thats now the "toy") Anyway, the motor is all stock except cat back duals. I'd like to install a little beefier cam. Whats the deal with the roller cam? I cant find an aftermarket roller cam. Does it have to be? Can anyone suggest a good street cam (idle to 5500) with a little more "lope" than stock? what about intake manifolds? i see edelbrock has an e-tec manifold but its for a carbuerator. Why am i having a hard time finding performance parts for this engine? if i do a cam, do i need to supply more fuel and how? All my engine experience has been carbuerated. I dont want to spend a fortune, just looking to pep it up a little and make her sound a little meaner. any suggestions?

    Re: cam question

I did alot of research before building the 365 vortec for my 1998 Express. It runs very well considering it is in a 6,000 lbs van. I used the factory LT4 cam not the hotcam and did the PCM tuning with my laptop. I am familiar with TBI chip burning/tuning, OBDI LT1, and LS1-edit so the vortec stuff was a no-brainer. The software/cable package was expensive though.

    Re: cam question

    welcome to the forum.
you cant find a roller cam for your vortec?
you havent looked hard enough. crane, comp cams, lunati, erson
    all have them...
what you need is professional suggestions from the cam
    manufacturer.
lope and power to 5500rpm arent likely. the lope is low-flow
misfire and isnt condusive to power output for your needs.
    your vortec has:
    no aftermarket injector replacement
3 manifold choices (stock, vortec marine, and ramjet 350)
obdII computer control (cam tuning will have to be custom)
there are vortec mods you can do for less $$$
