The only real way he MIGHT get that is if he gets a dyno tune and everything stcok was soooooo messed up (i.e AFR being way off) but that is likely not going to happen. Diesels can get that much from just a chip but I seriously doubt the gas can.

My buddy claims he is getting a chip for his '97 vortec 350 that claims an 89hp gain JUST from the tuner? I don't think that is plausable at all, unless the stock unit completely sucks. I'm thinking you'd need a heck of a lot more than a chip just to get that amount of gains.![]()

Does that chip include an intake, full hi-flow exhaust and a new cam!?!??
Nope, just the chip. I chuckled at him when he told, and I said there was NO WAY to get 89hp out of just a chip.
And I know all about the diesels getting big numbers from just chips. My parents drive '05 and '06 F350 diesels, and my oldest brother has a heavily modified '04 6.0.
Man I love diesels, but I had to settle for a 2005 F150 STX 4x4. Not bad for a first vehicle I guess.![]()
What is you buddy smokin'?![]()
NO WAY, 89HP is extremely off! First, there is no chip for any 96+ trucks just custom tunes and handheld programmers. Even if it was dyno tuned he'll NEVER see 89HP.

Maybe 8-9 hp, but not 89hp gain from a PCM tune alone.

A friend of mine claims the auto tech teacher at the alva tech school claims he can get 90 HP out of a stock vortec truck just through tuning. My friend says it would be burning so much fuel it would melt the engine down but it would make 90 HP. Not only don't I believe him, I'm not going to that tech school either.

the bs meter is running now......
if the "teacher" is so good about tweaking a vortec into 70hp+
then everybody is getting screwed on tunes, custom tunes, and
hand-helds. this "teacher" is missin' out a get-outta-teaching
card... hed be well into the fifth or sixth million.

I agree with all of you- there is no way you'd get that much power from just a tune. Good god, you'd need some good mods to get that much!
I can routinely get 35HP out of a stock or slightly modded 5.3 or 5.7 tune. If I push the limits I might get 40. 89HP from a tune alone on a stock 5.7 Vortec! No way, I'd have to see it to believe it. I call![]()

that's all I have to say
He can tune the living Sh*t out of it & it still has 19+ lb injectors in it that will limit the truck to somewhere around 310hp at the wheels with alot of major mods, and most of the bolt-ons you can think of. If he could get it that rich on 19lb injectors, it would be a true miracle, and it would not melt down from an abundance of fuel (yes it could wash the rings down). Now if he leaned it way out that is a different story, atleast in regards to the meltdown. Still a load of BS on the 89 hp increase from the tune. Maybe the truck is not running & he is going to tune it to get it running to say 1800 rpm or so. That should be close to 90 hp, and thus the claim is supported.

He also thinks he's gonna have about 600 horse in it by the end of the summer on stock heads.
I told him 400 crank HP with stock heads would be a challenge.
Increasing the fuel pressure to 70PSI will bring 19 pound injectors to 23.7 pounds. Going to 80 psi and a few mods all bolt-ons, (without going inside the engine except to change valve springs and keepers to install 1.6: roller rockers), tuned headers, tuned PCM, e-fans, etc. will get you to 327 rwhp, going to 85psi will get you to 329 rwhp and finally get you over 400 ftlbs of torque. BTW you cam't do it with the stock poppet injectors, you have to use the MPI fuel system ugrade. Figuring 21% for loss that means you will be close to 400hp at the crank.
Stock Vortec heads are good to 400hp, With a little work, such as 2.02 int/1.9exh valves, cleaning up the ehxaust ports, higher ratio rockers, different fuel system, and a cam change the Vortec heads can get to 500hp. Even higher with a blower or turbo.
